The court has referred the ruling to the Grand Mufti to give his opinion on the case \u2014 which is legally required, albeit non-binding, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-44993661\">BBC notes<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/middle-east-news\/egypt\/egypt-sentences-75-people-to-death-for-2013-sit-in-1.6317759\">Haaretz<\/a><\/u> and <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.xinhuanet.com\/english\/2018-07\/28\/c_137354117.htm\">Xinhua<\/a><\/u> also have the story.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, a debate is being waged in the foreign press over the US decision <\/strong><strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/07\/26\/us-releases-usd-195-mn-in-military-aid-to-egypt\/\">last week<\/a><\/u><\/strong><strong> to unfreeze USD 195 mn in military aid to Egypt it suspended last year. <\/strong>Leading the charge against the decision was the New York Times. With the move, the State Department has practically given Egypt a thumbs up on human rights while its jail population has continued to swell, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/26\/world\/middleeast\/egypt-human-rights-us-aid.html\">writes Declan Walsh<\/a><\/u>. \u201cThe aid decision reflects the new tenor of American foreign policy under Mr. Pompeo and the national security adviser, John R. Bolton, who have shown a willingness to trade American leadership on human rights for an embrace of friendly autocrats,\u201d he writes. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/07\/27\/sunday-review\/obama-egypt-coup-trump.html\">David Kirkpatrick echoes similar sentiments<\/a><\/u> on the state of human rights in Egypt, while extending the accusation of the US government\u2019s disinterest in human rights in Egypt to the Obama administration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The US should leverage Egypt\u2019s dependence on military aid to press it on the human rights issue<\/strong>, <u><a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/congress-blog\/foreign-policy\/399341-administration-should-use-its-leverage-to-get-egypt-to\">says Bran Dooley on the Hill<\/a><\/u>. Dooley says that withholding the aid had proven effective, citing a retrial ordered by Egyptian authorities on the foreign funding case, which saw 43 employees of foreign NGOs sentenced to up to five years in jail.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Foreign Ministry\u2019s Abu Zaid with the counter argument:<\/strong> <u><a href=\"https:\/\/aawsat.com\/english\/home\/article\/1345981\/egypt-says-us-aid-package-part-shared-strategic-ties\">Asharq Al Awsat<\/a><\/u> is running statements by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zaid where he saus the decision reflects the \u201cimportance and specificity\u201d of Egypt-US relations. The move comes \u201cin light of Washington\u2019s recognition of the importance of the Egyptian role in promoting [the] stability of the Middle East,\u201d Abu Zeid said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More negative coverage:<\/strong> This comes as Human Rights Watch denounced the release of the aid, saying in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2018\/07\/27\/us-release-military-aid-egypt-sends-signal\">a statement on Thursday<\/a><\/u> that it \u201c[sends] the wrong message\u201d to Egypt on its human rights record. Meanwhile, UN human rights experts are calling on Egyptian authorities to release songwriter Galal El Behairy, who faces imprisonment for criticizing government policies in his songs, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2018\/07\/1015612\">according to UN News<\/a><\/u>.
