Look for Eastern Tobacco to pilot the program with a 4% stake sale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yields on 10-year government treasuries reached yesterday their highest level since July<\/strong><strong> 2017<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almalnews.com\/Story\/381890\/12\/%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%A6%D8%AF-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AD%D9%83%D9%88%D9%85%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D9%8A%D9%82%D9%81%D8%B2-%D9%84%D8%A3%D8%B9%D9%84%D9%89-%D9%85%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%88%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%AA%D9%87-%D8%AE%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%84-12-%D8%B4%D9%87%D8%B1%D8%A7%D9%8B\">according to Al Mal<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbe.org.eg\/en\/Auctions\/Pages\/AuctionsEGPTBonds.aspx\">CBE data shows<\/a> that 10-year T-bills have reached 17.859%, up 140 bps from last year. Yields on five-year treasuries also spiked 140 bps y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have we reached peak yield?<\/strong> EFG Hermes lead economist Mohamed Abu Basha sees the higher bond yields at CBE auctions as a symptom of \u201chot money\u201d investors pulling out as the CBE began monetary easing and lowering interest rates this year. Abu Basha doesn\u2019t see yields dropping anytime soon, saying he doesn\u2019t see the CBE resuming its monetary easing in the short term as it waits for the blip caused by the most recent round of subsidy cuts to pass.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has canceled a planned trip to Egypt<\/strong>, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, and France as his government grapples with the aftermath of widespread flooding, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFT9N1TD06B\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The trip was meant to kick off tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waiting for the governator: <\/strong>There\u2019s still no word on when the reshuffle of provincial governors may take place. That\u2019s the bottom line in an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1305853\">Al Masry Al Youm<\/a> report that suggests leading jurists may be among the candidates for higher office. The shuffle had been expected at the <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/07\/03\/what-were-tracking-this-week-299\/\">end of June<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>Egypt was Africa\u2019s third largest market for \u201ccorporate transactions\u201d in 1H2018 <\/strong>according to Africa-focused <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratlinkglobal.com\/\">research firm Stratlink<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessdailyafrica.com\/markets\/marketnews\/Deals-hit-Sh87bn-on-quarter-two-activity\/3815534-4654594-2orx5f\/index.html\">Kenya\u2019s Business Daily<\/a> reports. Egypt reportedly USD 1.42 bn worth of M&As, IPOs and other equity-related transactions in the first half of the year, tying with Morocco for third place. At the head of the pack: South Africa and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can we just agree it\u2019s going to be a \u201cchallenging\u201d fall for emerging markets <\/strong>and get over the Zombie Apocalypse stuff? Bloomberg TV was awash in talk yesterday about how the EM meltdown is \u201con pause\u201d because the world didn\u2019t immediately end after the US and China slapped each other with trade sanctions. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-07-09\/emerging-market-carry-trade-makes-comeback-as-dollar-rally-fades\">the carry trade, it says, is \u201cmaking a comeback.\u201d<\/a> Even if Bloomberg\u2019s index shows that EM currencies are in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-07-06\/currencies-rebound-as-dollar-slumps-amid-trade-war-em-review\">longest losing run since 2015<\/a>, the broadcaster tells us, UBS\u2019s head of global emerging market strategy, Geoff Dennis, thinks we\u2019re probably hitting the bottom for EM (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/audio\/2018-07-10\/fairly-confident-this-could-be-bottom-for-emerging-markets\">listen, runtime: 5:43<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, is there a frame out there that might help me understand what\u2019s going on? <\/strong>Enter Mohamed El Erian like Puck in A Midsummer Night\u2019s Dream. Writing for the Financial Times, he says the outlook \u201csuggests further USD appreciation, continued outperformance of US stocks and occasional spikes in volatility. It is a world in which companies with solid balance sheets, limited financial mismatches and agile business models should be in demand as long-term investors find opportunity in solid names temporarily and unduly depressed. It is also an environment in which active managers are better placed to outshine passive investing approaches.\u201d There\u2019s plenty here for EM investors to consider. Top negotiator David Davis was somewhat classy on the way out, but Boris was last heard mumbling that May\u2019s \u2018soft\u2019 Brexit plan would see the UK <strong>\u201ctruly headed for the status of a colony\u201d<\/strong> (no joke). Sterling is sliding in the wake of the news, so if there\u2019s any justice in the world, you may be able to find a way to snap up a few GBP at a slight discount if you\u2019re hoarding them to pay school fees this fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your American counterparty is going to be talking today <\/strong>about prospects of a conservative lock on the US Supreme Court that could guarantee a generation of rulings that roll-back rights protections for women, minorities and LGBTQ people. That\u2019s right, folks: The Donald just made nominated his second appointment to the US Supreme Court.
