<\/a> The western financial press doesn\u2019t like the outlook for emerging markets in the back half of 2018, <\/strong>with the Financial Times<\/a><\/u> writing that \u201ca challenging second half \u2026 awaits investors with a number of flashing warnings over a slowing macroeconomic story outside of the US.\u201d Among them: The strong USD, slowing growth in China and \u201cconcerns over tit-for-tat protectionism.\u201d This comes as \u201cUS equities are showing signs of strain\u201d nine years into a bull market, the salmon-colored paper warns. The Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/u> adds that \u201cthe USD\u2019s surprisingly durable rally and expectations of strong U.S. growth are upending investments across the globe, punishing commodities and emerging markets<\/strong> while attracting more overseas money to the U.S.\u201d None of that, though, justifies a squib of a piece in FTfm<\/a><\/u> that claims (without citing a single source) that the recent (and sharp) outflows from emerging markets equities leaves \u201csome investors\u201d seeing \u201cuncomfortable parallels between current market conditions and the 1998 Asian crisis.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

All this comes as the EGP finds itself under pressure \u2014 and as Egyptian equities are in a \u201ctechnical correction\u201d <\/strong>(meaning they\u2019re down >10% from their 2018 highs), having lost 11.9% from their peak earlier this year, Bloomberg notes<\/a><\/u>. The \u201cemerging-market sell-off is taking a heavy toll on Africa,\u201d from bonds to equities and currencies, the business information service notes.<\/p>\n

How bad can the trade war get? <\/strong>Really bad, according to an Axios<\/a><\/u> exclusive that suggests the Trump administration plans to \u201cblow up\u201d the World Trade Organization<\/strong> with a \u201cstunning\u201d draft bill that that \u201cessentially provides Trump with a license to raise US tariffs at will, without congressional consent and international rules be damned.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EM \/ FM index shuffle: <\/strong>With the upgrade of Saudi Arabia to emerging markets status, market watchers are fretting about the GCC\u2019s weight in MSCI EM given the region is \u201cnoted for its high level of state control and sometimes murky standards of corporate governance,\u201d the Financial Times<\/a><\/u> reports. Others still are worried that the MSCI Frontier index is edging \u201c<\/strong>closer to oblivion<\/a><\/u><\/strong>\u201d <\/strong>with the upgrade of Argentina and Saudi Arabia (and a potential bump for Kuwait).<\/p>\n

No (additional) dividend for you: <\/strong>Across the pond, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley (kind of) passed the second round of the US Federal Reserve\u2019s annual stress tests \u2014 and the US unit of Deutsche Bank failed.
