President Abdel Fattah El Sisi\u2019s inauguration of a new irrigation dam at Assiut yesterday<\/strong> was the main topic of discussion on the airwaves last night.<\/p>\n

The irrigation dam, one of the largest water projects on the nile, will benefit farmers across 20% of Egypt\u2019s agricultural land<\/strong> in Giza, Fayoum, Beni Sueif, Assiut, and Minya, Irrigation Ministry Spokesperson Hossam El Imam told Al Hayah fi Masr (watch, runtime: 5:12<\/a>). El Imam also phoned into Yahduth fi Masr for a chat with Sherif Amer about how the dam project ties into the ministry\u2019s wider water conservation efforts (watch, runtime: 3:41<\/a> and runtime: 1:40<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The dam includes a EUR 69 mn hydropower station, which will generate clean energy equivalent to 50,000 tonnes of fuel<\/strong> per year, Electricity Ministry Spokesperson Ayman Hamza told Hona Al Asema\u2019s Lama Gebril. This reduction of fuel consumption will save the country EGP 130 mn and will also cut down on our CO\u2082 emissions by 125,000 tonnes (watch, runtime: 5:00<\/a>). Chinese state-owned company Sinohydro will cooperate in building the station, which will take around seven years to complete, Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker said yesterday, according to Ahram Online<\/a>.
