<\/a> Energy plays haves slipped out of favour with emerging market equity funds<\/strong>, Steve Johnson writes for the Financial Times<\/a>, \u201cin what appears to be a structural trend, rather than a cyclical one driven by weak oil prices.\u201d A new study by Copley Fund Research shows that \u201c12% of EM equity funds now hold no oil stocks \u2026 This is a marked change from the period up to 2012, when virtually every fund held at least one oil and gas company stock.\u201d In the past, oil stocks had fallen in and out of demand based on movements in global prices. Despite the rally in oil prices over the last several months, however, \u201cthere are quite a few funds who are happy to hold nothing,\u201d says Copley founder Steven Holden.<\/p>\n

So what\u2019s new this time? <\/strong>Tech plays are winning new allocations, but perhaps a bigger issue is \u201cthe seemingly unstoppable rise of mantras such as \u201cESG\u201d<\/strong>, which involves taking environmental, social and corporate governance issues into account in an investment decision.\u201d This makes things more difficult for oil companies, particularly in emerging markets \u2014 some of which are considered the world\u2019s \u201cbiggest contributors to global warming, and therefore, climate change,\u201d Mirabaud Asset Management\u2019s Daniel Tubbs says, explaining that as part of a firm\u2019s \u201cfiduciary duty\u201d to clients, \u201cwe are looking for long-term exposure to sustainability trends.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
