Your colleagues in North America are celebrating with a three-day weekend in observance of Labor Day (US and Canada).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cairo loves Beijing: <\/strong>The local press is hailing \u201ca new age of cooperation\u201d between Egypt and China after President Abdel Fattah El Sisi signed five new agreements with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping. The signing comes ahead of the China-Africa Cooperation Forum in Beijing, which runs from tomorrow until Tuesday. We breakdown the agreements in today\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GERD meeting? <\/strong>President El Sisi was reportedly set to discuss the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed yesterday, but we\u2019ve heard nothing on that from the press over the weekend. Meanwhile, <strong>Ethiopia\u2019s new ambassador to Cairo<\/strong>, Azanaw Tadessea, arrived in Egypt yesterday to submit his credentials and assume his new post, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egyptindependent.com\/ethiopias-new-ambassador-arrives-in-egypt\/\">AMAY reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>New US ambassador tapped? <\/strong>David Satterfield (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/r\/pa\/ei\/biog\/214064.htm\">bio<\/a>) is seen as the \u201cleading candidate\u201d to become the new US ambassador to Egypt, a position that has been vacant for over a year, two US <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-egypt-envoy\/satterfield-emerges-as-leading-candidate-for-u-s-envoy-to-egypt-idUSKCN1LF28T\">officials told Reuters<\/a>. Satterfield is currently assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs, and will officially be announced as the new envoy to Egypt if the US Senate confirms David Schenker as his replacement. \u201cA former U.S. official said Satterfield had particularly good contacts with the Egyptian military because of his 2009 to 2017 service heading the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in the Sinai Peninsula, which oversees security provisions of the 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Busy fall season for diplomacy: <\/strong>The China trip is the first big meeting of El Sisi in what looks set to be a busy fall on the diplomatic front, with both French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong> and Indian PM <strong>Narendra Modi<\/strong> so far confirmed as due in town before year\u2019s end. The president is also due to meet Sudanese President <strong>Omar Al-Bashir<\/strong> in October.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t expect last week\u2019s Moody\u2019s upgrade to impact Egypt bonds<\/strong>, says Arqaam.<a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/08\/29\/moodys-upgrades-outlook-on-egypt-to-positive-reaffirms-long-term-issuer-rating-at-b3\/\">Last week\u2019s upgrade of the ratings agency\u2019s outlook<\/a> on Egypt to \u201cpositive\u201d from \u201cstable\u201d will likely not impact Egypt\u2019s fixed assets as the market has already priced in the gains from the reform agenda, Abdul Kadir Hussain, the head of fixed income at Arqaam Capital, tells Bloomberg TV. \u201cThe progress has been seen fairly early by the market,\u201d he said in response to questions on if there is wiggle room to improve following the upgrade (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2018-08-30\/moody-s-raises-egypt-credit-outlook-in-a-nod-to-reforms-video\">watch, runtime: 2:44<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global private equity firm Actis has put in a bid to acquire \u201cthe bulk\u201d of Abraaj Group\u2019s emerging markets funds<\/strong>, two sources familiar to the matter said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/abraaj-ma-actis\/actis-bids-for-abraajs-emerging-market-funds-sources-idUSL3N1VK3MG\">according to Reuters<\/a>, which gave no further details on Actis\u2019 alleged bid. Actis is up against Abu Dhabi Financial Group as well as a consortium formed by Kuwait\u2019s Agility and New York-based Centerbridge Partners. The transaction should close before the year is out, according to one of the sources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Argentina is freaking out investors already spooked by Turkey<\/strong>, as we suggested on Thursday.The peso \u201ctumbled to a record-low\u201d on Friday, becoming the worst-performing EM currency, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-08-30\/brutal-selloff-in-argentina-turkey-engulfs-emerging-market-peers\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>, falling 12.6% against the USD, even after Argentine policy makers decided to hike interests rates by 15 bps to 60%. \u201cThat took the peso\u2019s year-to-date decline against the dollar to 51.7%, past the 42.9% drop the lira is nursing,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ca6b98c4-ac7b-11e8-89a1-e5de165fa619\">the FT said<\/a>. The salmon-colored paper has an FAQ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2bad9bbc-aca6-11e8-94bd-cba20d67390c?tagToFollow=9fcbd277-102b-4669-b9ee-502c81922ab3\">if you need to get up to speed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And it\u2019s sending yields through the roof: <\/strong>Yields on emerging market bonds are approaching 2006 levels, when US interest rates were 3x what they are now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d5438d2c-a6ec-11e8-926a-7342fe5e173f\">the FT also notes<\/a>. \u201cYields for local currency-denominated EM bonds have risen all the way back to 2006 levels, while high-yield corporate \u2014 and in particular sovereign \u2014 USD-denominated debt now pay more than before the global financial crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trade talks between Canada and the US broke off on Friday without an agreement <\/strong>and the two sides have since agreed to sit down again on Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-trade-nafta\/u-s-to-move-ahead-with-mexico-trade-pact-keep-talking-to-canada-idUSKCN1LG1DM\">according to Reuters<\/a>. This comes as The Donald doesn\u2019t seem terribly interested in an agreement, having told Bloomberg in off-the-record remarks late last week that he\u2019s driving such a hard line that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/trumps-leaked-off-record-comments-complicate-trade-deal\/story?id=57528243\">it\u2019s going to be so insulting<\/a> they\u2019re not going to be able to make an [agreement].\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/us-politics\/article-trump-warns-congress-against-interfering-in-nafta-trade-negotiations\/\">later turned to Twitter<\/a> to declare, \u201cThere is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA [pact]. If we don\u2019t make a fair [agreement] for the U.S. after decades of abuse, Canada will be out. Congress should not interfere w\/ these negotiations or I will simply terminate NAFTA entirely & we will be far better off.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/19452660-ad3d-11e8-94bd-cba20d67390c\">Financial Times<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/u-s-canada-rush-to-hash-out-nafta-compromise-1535724907\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> both have the story.
