Annual core inflation, which does not account for volatile items such as food, dipped slightly to 8.6% in September, compared to 8.8% in August.<\/p>\n

The accelerated inflation \u201creflects the continuation of massive increases in the prices of fruits and vegetables<\/strong> on a monthly basis, and, to a lesser extent, the \u2026 back to school season,\u201d Pharos Holdings\u2019 head of research, Radwa El-Swaify, tells Reuters<\/a>. Inflation levels accelerated for a second time this year in August<\/a>, after rising in June as a result of increases to the costs of fuel, power, and transportation<\/a> as part of the government\u2019s phase-out of subsidies.<\/p>\n

What does this mean for interest rates?<\/strong> September\u2019s inflation figures have \u201cdashed hopes\u201d the central bank will cut interest rates, particularly in light of the emerging markets sell-off, write Tarek El Tablawy and Ahmed Feteha for Bloomberg<\/a>. \u201cWith inflation at such a level, it has now become almost certain that we won\u2019t see rate cuts in 2018 or even the first quarter of 2019,\u201d Pharos\u2019 Mahmoud El Masry tells the business information service. El Masry also pointed to rising global oil prices and impending fuel subsidy cuts as risk factors for inflation.
