To wit:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>US and European equities cratered yesterday<\/strong>, with American equities <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-drop-as-tech-shares-extend-declines-1542704669\">erasing their gains for the year<\/a><\/strong> as a rout <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/19\/business\/tech-stocks-markets-slump.html\">kicked off by tech shares<\/a><\/strong> deepened and edged into other sectors. The big five \u201cFAANG\u201d tech stocks have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/59dfad10-ec9b-11e8-8180-9cf212677a57\">lost a combined USD 1 tn in market cap<\/a><\/strong> since the correction began. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Asian shares are following suit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/21\/asia-markets-market-selloff-oil-prices-currencies-in-focus.html\">this morning<\/a><\/strong>. (You can get the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/markets\/stocks\/world-indexes\/asia-pacific\">latest snapshot here<\/a><\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oil plummeted 7.6% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f7d8a984-ecd4-11e8-89c8-d36339d835c0\">on Tuesday<\/a><\/strong>, driven in part by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-11-20\/wall-street-playing-option-defense-is-said-to-speed-oil-plunge?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Wall Street\u2019s use of futures contracts<\/a><\/strong>.Need a primer on what\u2019s going on with oil? <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/20\/business\/energy-environment\/oil-prices.htm\">Stanley Reed has your back<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The USD was up more than 0.7% <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/asia-stocks-drop-oil-stymied-as-growth-woes-grip-global-markets-idUSKCN1NQ01Y\">against a basket<\/a><\/strong> of six major currencies. With \u201cfears of a slowdown in [global] economic growth growth taking hold,\u201d the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-global-forex\/dollar-makes-a-comeback-as-equities-rout-drives-safe-haven-bid-idUSKCN1NQ042\">greenback is looking like a safe haven<\/a><\/strong>, some think.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Still, Wall Street\u2019s \u201cfear gauge\u201d hasn\u2019t returned to its October peak yet<\/strong>, though the Vix is now at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2ff574d4-ecd8-11e8-89c8-d36339d835c0\">a three-week high<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s going on?<\/strong> A growing number of analysts are worried about the global growth outlook, and some are suggesting that the markets are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/20\/business\/stock-market-drop-economy.html\">picking up on underlying weaknesses<\/a> in the US and other developed economies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A loss of momentum in Western markets is going to create more turbulence for EM: <\/strong>\u201cThere should be little doubt that developed economies are losing momentum,\u201d the always-on-point Mohamed El Erian writes for the Financial Times \u2014 and \u201cthe Brexit saga, Italy\u2019s stand-off with Brussels and the changing politics in Germany\u201d suggest there could be still more downside to come. That\u2019s \u201c<strong>only adding to the complexities facing an emerging world<\/strong> already coping with China\u2019s more uncertain outlook. \u2026 <strong>The world\u2019s emerging economies also face challenges because of the shift from synchronised growth in developed economies<\/strong> last year to a much more mixed trend in 2018.\u201d What does this all mean for investors?
