Society at large is insensitive to the issue, which has continued to affect more people \u2013 especially the youth who \u201cfeel trapped\u201d by poor economic and social prospects. Even though Egypt\u2019s suicide rate, according to World Health Organization statistics, is among the lowest internationally, evidence is suggesting that the rate is much higher \u2014 or at best \u2014 gaining momentum. A recently created Facebook page, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/breakthesilenceegy\/photos\/a.698587413679791\/882281275310403\/?type=3&theater\">Break the Silence<\/a>, aims to raise awareness.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Among the handful of other stories out there:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Retired soccer great Aboutrika has been hit with a one-year jail sentence <\/strong>for tax evasion. The onetime icon, hit with charges he has Ikhwan sympathies, has lived in exile as a football commentator in Qatar since 2013. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news24.com\/Africa\/News\/egypts-retired-soccer-star-sentenced-to-1-year-in-prison-20181113-2\">Associated Press<\/a> has the story.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Egypt is taking down street signs bearing the names of Ikhwan leaders,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al-monitor.com\/pulse\/originals\/2018\/11\/egypt-changes-streets-named-after-muslim-brotherhood-leaders.html\">according to Al Monitor<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A court has sentenced a policeman to three years in prison<\/strong> and another to six months for beating a detainee to death, prompting criticism on social media, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/middle_east\/verdict-against-police-for-detainees-death-stirs-criticism\/2018\/11\/13\/00ea1624-e73b-11e8-8449-1ff263609a31_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.65f93fbbad8e\">AP reported<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An initiative looks to help women cancer patients <\/strong>handle the physical side-effects of their treatment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-egypt-cancer-rehabilitation\/women-cancer-patients-learn-makeup-tips-in-new-egypt-workshop-idUSKCN1NH21W\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/li>\n<li><strong>An Egyptian beekeeper claims he is curing patients<\/strong> of rheumatism and boosting their immunity levels, <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/commoditiesNews\/idAFL8N1XO7PY\">according to Reuters<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Football flap: <\/strong>The postponement of next week\u2019s Egypt-UAE football friendly game has angered the UAE\u2019s Football Association, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenational.ae\/sport\/football\/uae-fa-slam-advertising-agency-for-postponing-egypt-friendly-1.791312\">says the National<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s another relatively quiet day for Egypt in the international press, with no one story driving the conversation.
