Brent was down 6.6%, while West Texas Intermediate in the US was down 7.1%.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is oil plunging? It is almost a perfect storm <\/strong>more than it is any one factor.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/13\/why-oil-prices-tumbled-from-four-year-highs-into-a-bear-market.html\">CNBC<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/oil-falls-further-as-trump-decries-production-cuts-1542110718\">WSJ<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-oil\/oil-markets-struggle-to-find-footing-after-7-percent-slump-idUSKCN1NJ02U?il=0\">Reuters<\/a> suggest it has a lot to do with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fast-rising production<\/strong> in the United States;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fears that demand could fall<\/strong> thanks to slower economic growth on the back of trade tensions (OPEC and the International Energy Agency both see less consumption growth than before, at a minimum);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Last month\u2019s stock-market sell-off<\/strong> (\u201cone week after crude futures struck their highs, two-thirds of the stocks in the S&P 500 plunged into correction territory,\u201d dragging crude futures with them);<\/li>\n<li><strong>A stronger USD<\/strong>, which makes oil more expensive for countries whose currencies don\u2019t move in tandem with the greenback;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The sanctions waivers<\/strong> from the US that allow eight nations to continue importing Iranian crude.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Look for things to get more tense between Washington and Riyadh: <\/strong>\u201cOPEC and Saudi Arabia [are] on a collision course with U.S. President Donald Trump, who publicly supports low oil prices and who has called on OPEC not to cut production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speaking of DC and KSA: America has finally appointed an ambassador <\/strong>to the kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-trump-saudi\/trump-to-nominate-retired-army-general-as-u-s-ambassador-to-saudi-arabia-idUSKCN1NJ03O?il=0\">naming retired general John Abizaid<\/a> to a post vacant since January 2017. Abizaid oversaw the US Central Command during the early years of America\u2019s war in Iraq.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can we now have an ambassador <\/strong>here in Cairo, too, Mr. Trump?<\/p>\n<p><strong>The UK is closing in on a Brexit agreement<\/strong> with the European Union, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/brexit-negotiators-reach-preliminary-deal-1542129138\">WSJ<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/f7e26d32-e71d-11e8-8a85-04b8afea6ea3\">FT<\/a> suggest. British PM Theresa May could put the proposed pact could go before her \u201cdeeply divided cabinet\u201d as early as today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Goldman Sachs is in the spotlight this morning as it faces questioning by the US Justice Department <\/strong>over its role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-05-24\/how-malaysia-s-1mdb-scandal-shook-the-financial-world-quicktake\">scandal surrounding 1MDB<\/a>, the state-owned Malaysian investment fund. \u201cAfter one of its senior bankers pleaded guilty to charges that he helped orchestrate a vast fraud at Malaysia\u2019s state investment fund, 1MDB, investors have started to fret about what sanctions the bank might face. Shares in the group fell more than 7 per cent on Monday and they are now down more than a quarter since March,\u201d the FT writes in its t-up for a piece on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/2f3b785c-e73a-11e8-8a85-04b8afea6ea3\">Key questions for Goldman Sachs about Malaysian scandal<\/a>.
