<\/a> Terrorists kill seven, wound nine Coptics Christians in Minya attack:<\/strong> Terrorists opened fire on buses carrying Coptic Christians making their way to the monastery of St. Samuel the Confessor in Minya on Friday, killing seven on board one bus, according to the Coptic Orthodox Church<\/a>. The church said that two other buses were also targeted, resulting in the injury of at least 19, but Interior Ministry sources<\/a> maintained that the attack was contained to one bus and that only seven were injured. Six of the seven victims<\/a> were members of the Shehata family, including 15-year-old Beshoy Shehata<\/a> and his younger relative Maria Shehata<\/a>. The shooting took place close to the area where similar attacks<\/a> claimed 29 lives in May 2017.<\/p>\n

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi offered his condolences<\/strong> and vowed in a tweet on Friday<\/a> to step up Egypt\u2019s fight against terrorism. Al Azhar also issued a statement condemning the attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Daesh claimed responsibility through their Amaq propaganda outlet<\/strong>, according to the Guardian<\/a>. The group said the attacks were revenge for Egypt\u2019s imprisonment of \u201cour chaste sisters,\u201d apparently referring to the detention of former Ikhwan deputy leader Khairat El Shater\u2019s daughter, Aida, and six other women one day earlier<\/a>. If their claims are verified, this would mean the return of the group targeting Christians after a near-year-long stint of major attacks on Copts, says the New York Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The story gained significant traction in the foreign press over the weekend<\/strong>, with the BBC citing past accusations<\/a> by Copts that Egyptian authorities are making \u201conly token gestures to protect them,\u201d and following up<\/a> a day later to document the victims\u2019 funeral service. The incident is \u201cthe most serious attack on a minority in more than a year,\u201d Reuters noted<\/a>, while the Associated Press<\/a> said the attack is \u201clikely to cast a dark shadow on one of el-Sissi\u2019s showpieces \u2014 the World Youth Forum.\u201d The National called Friday\u2019s attack an \u201cabomination<\/a>\u201d and Singapore\u2019s Straits Times noted<\/a> how radical extremism continues to be a problem despite authorities\u2019 obvious efforts against terrorism.
