PLUS: Egypt-Chinese JV to assemble and export EVs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and happy hump day. <\/strong>We made it to the midweek mark and are looking forward to the weekend to come. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE BIG STORIES TODAY<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#1- NBE raises limits for local USD transactions on select credit card <\/strong><strong>types:<\/strong> The National Bank of Egypt (NBE) has announced that it will raise its usage limits for credit cards carrying out transactions denominated in foreign currency, the bank announced on its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbe.com.eg\/NBE\/E\/#\/EN\/ProductDetails?inParams=%7B%22CategoryID%22%3A%22NewsCat1ID%22%2C%22ProductID%22%3A%2218800%22%7D\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The new transaction limits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Visa Gold and Mastercard Titanium <\/strong>will have a limit of<strong> EGP 25k,<\/strong> up from EGP 7.5k previously;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Visa Platinum, Mastercard Platinum, and UEFA Champions League Mastercard<\/strong> will have a limit of <strong>EGP 40k,<\/strong> from EGP 12.5k previously;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mastercard World, Visa Signature, Mastercard World Elite, Visa Infinite, and Corporate Credit Cards <\/strong>will have a limit of<strong> EGP 60k,<\/strong> from EGP 20k previously.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Limits on Visa Classic, MasterCard Standard,<\/strong> and MasterCard EgyptAir cards were<strong> kept unchanged at EGP 5k.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Clients can also use the international limits for purchases and cash withdrawals while <\/strong><strong>traveling abroad<\/strong> by contacting the bank within 90 days, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbe.com.eg\/AssetsManager\/b7cca49b-f76b-49b0-b661-1cf7c439bb0c.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">according to limits listed here for each card type (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- Another Egyptian-Chinese EV venture in the works:<\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gvinvestments.co\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">GV Investments\u2019s<\/a> automotive arm GV Auto has signed a partnership agreement with Chinese state-owned auto manufacturer FAW Group to locally assemble, market, distribute, and export EVs, GV Investments Chairman Sherif Hamouda told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alborsaanews.com\/2024\/05\/13\/1791853\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Al Borsa<\/a>. The partnership will be backed up with an initial investment of EPG 3 bn, Hamouda told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AsharqbEGY\/status\/1790076915266597293\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Chinese EVs, assembled in Egypt: <\/strong>Locally assembled EVs from the partnership should start rolling out by the beginning of next year, Hamouda added. The two companies will use already existing factories to assemble the vehicles and have already set their sights on what models to assemble locally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Not just local assembly, but local manufacture too: <\/strong>\u201cManufacturing will not be limited to local assembly only, but rather complete parts will be manufactured for the first time,\u201d Hamouda told Asharq Business. Chinese EVs, solar cells, semiconductors, and a wide selection of other Chinese products are set to see drastic increases in duties in order to \u201cprotect strategic American industries.\u201d Biden will be upholding the same tariffs put in place by former President Donald Trump, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/stuartanderson\/2020\/08\/06\/biden-says-he-will-end-trumps-tariffs-on-chinese-made-goods\/#23954ae1523a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">he had criticized<\/a> during his presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tariffs on Chinese EV will see a fourfold increase, jumping from 25% to 100%.<\/strong> This comes as a response to US automakers losing their foothold in China, and concern that domestic carmakers will be undercut on their own soil. Tariffs on Chinese solar cells and semiconductors will double to 50%, though the increases are expected to be staggered to give domestic companies time to increase their production or find exporters from other countries.
