YouTube steps up its war on ad blockers:<\/strong> YouTube is strengthening its crackdown on third-party ad-blocking apps, it said in a blog post<\/a> yesterday. The platform has introduced a restriction that should result in buffering issues or produce an error message saying \u201cthe following content is not available on this app\u201d for viewers using third-party ad-blocking apps, it said.<\/p>\n

In context:<\/strong> Last year the video streaming service \u201claunched a global effort\u201d to encourage users to allow ads or switch to YouTube Premium, YouTube communications manager Christopher Lawton told The Verge<\/a> back in October of last year. Viewers using ad blockers were presented with the message, \u201cVideo playback is blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rationale:<\/strong> Ad blockers mean that creators miss out on ad revenues, YouTube argues. The platform\u2019s policies \u201cdon\u2019t allow third-party apps to turn off ads because that prevents the creator from being rewarded for viewership,\u201d it said. \u201cAds on YouTube help support creators and let billions of people around the world use the streaming service.\u201d<\/p>\n

FYI-<\/strong> The YouTube Partner Program (YPP)<\/a> allows creators who meet certain criteria to monetize their content in a number of ways, including revenue sharing from ads being served on their videos.<\/p>\n

Loopholes could still be present: <\/strong>The crackdown targets third-party apps that use YouTube\u2019s API to block out ads. AdGuard says it\u2019s not affected<\/a> by the restriction because it doesn\u2019t use YouTube\u2019s API.<\/p>\n
