Tech transactions led the pack, with 141 M&As recorded in 2023, the energy and resources sectors \u2014 including metals and mining, oil and gas, and chemicals \u2014 also saw \u201csignificant capital deployment\u201d for the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Most came from the GCC: <\/strong>The Gulf nations closed 565 transactions, worth some USD 83.2 bn.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>At the M&A helm: <\/strong>The region\u2019s sovereign wealth funds drove activity \u2014 led by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), UAE\u2019s Mubadala, Saudi Arabia\u2019s Public Investment Fund (PIF), and the Qatar Investment Authority \u2014 with a focus on \u201cnational development and investing in sectors of the future,\u201d EY MENA strategy and transactions leader Brad Watson said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Foreign transactions made up the lion's share of the year\u2019s M&As: <\/strong>Cross border M&As made up 72% of the total value of M&As in 2023, with North America remaining the largest acquiring region by value \u2014 with transactions totaling USD 2.7 bn \u2014 and largest number of inbound MENA transactions \u2014 with 32. Meanwhile, domestic transactions made up 49% of the total volume of MENA M&As for the year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other highlights worth noting from the past year:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The UAE was investors\u2019 preferred destination. <\/strong>Interest in the UAE was driven by \u201cits business-friendly regulations and efficient legal framework.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outbound M&As secured USD 53.5 bn <\/strong>through 208 transactions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The region\u2019s largest M&A in 2023 <\/strong>was ADIA and Apollo Global Management\u2019s USD 8.2 bn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.apollo.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/434\/univar-solutions-to-be-acquired-by-apollo-funds-for-8-1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">acquisition of<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ir.apollo.com\/news-events\/press-releases\/detail\/434\/univar-solutions-to-be-acquired-by-apollo-funds-for-8-1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Univar Solutions<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>The second- and third-largest <\/strong>were PIF-owned Savvy Games\u2019 USD 4.9 bn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/491f1c16-9b0a-4836-8083-b79c2a67413e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">acquisition<\/a> of US mobile games developer Scopely and Blackstone and ADIA\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cvent.com\/en\/press-release\/cvent-to-be-acquired-by-blackstone\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 4.7 bn acquisition<\/a> of software company Cvent Holding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Looking ahead: <\/strong>\u201cWe expect M&A activity in MENA to remain robust in 2024 given continuing secular trends around energy transition and digitalization of everything,\u201d Watson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Asian markets are a mixed bag this morning:<\/strong> The Nikkei and Kospi are handily in the green, but Chinese markets remain closed for the Lunar New Year holiday, so there\u2019s nothing to report out of Hong Kong or Shanghai.
