Cairo is hosting another round of ceasefire talks: <\/strong>CIA head William Burns, Mossad chief David Barnea, Shin Bet head Ronen Bar, and Qatari Prime Minister Mohamed Bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani are in Cairo today to meet with intelligence chief Abbas Kamel for ceasefire and hostage negotiations, a number of media outlets have reported, citing unnamed US and Israeli officials. <\/p>\n

An agreement on the horizon? <\/strong>It\u2019s hoped that the Barnea\u2019s presence signals that Israel is still open to negotiations, despite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu\u2019s rejection<\/a> of Hamas\u2019 ceasefire proposal last week. \u201cThe discussions have been constructive and there\u2019s willingness to compromise,\u201d a diplomat briefed on the talks told the Financial Times<\/a>. \u201cBarnea wouldn\u2019t be going to the talks unless he had the go-ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Biden is pushing for a six-week ceasefire<\/strong>, which would give time for negotiators to \u201cbuild something more enduring,\u201d the US President said during a meeting with Jordanian King Abdullah, Reuters<\/a> reported. <\/p>\n

But stumbling blocks remain: <\/strong>Egypt said<\/a> that \u201cprovocative\u201d comments made by Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich were sabotaging efforts for a ceasefire negotiation, revealing an \u201cintention to kill and destroy.\u201d Smotrich had reportedly said that Egypt \u201cbears considerable responsibility for what happened on 7 October\u201d, claiming that Hamas had smuggled weapons through the Egyptian border. <\/p>\n

Israel continues its attacks on Rafah<\/strong>, killing over 100 and injuring hundreds others, Sky News<\/a> wrote. Israel says it has freed two Israeli-Argentine hostages<\/a> in the latest round of attacks. <\/p>\n

Further criticism:<\/strong> Israel should \u201cthink very seriously\u201d before taking further action in Rafah, the UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron told reporters<\/a> yesterday. \u201cWe think it is impossible to see how you can fight a war amongst these people.
