Nearly one third of folks here at Enterprise have been or are down this week with symptoms including aches, pains, chest infections, fever and (for some) vomiting \u2014 sending the rest of us into a work from home footing through week\u2019s end. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The culprit: <\/strong>There\u2019s everything from the common cold to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/jn1-coronavirus-variant-covid\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the latest strain of covid<\/a> and respiratory syncytial virus making the rounds. The good people at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elwatannews.com\/news\/details\/7141645\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">the Health Ministry have the rundown<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#1- <\/strong><strong>GCC bond issuances incoming? Don\u2019t hold your breath.<\/strong>Emirati news agency <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wam.ae\/en\/article\/b1lzyue-egypt-keen-develop-economic-investment-cooperation\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">WAM<\/a> reports that Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told it his ministry is mulling a possible bond sale in the GCC as part of the Finance Ministry's eternal drive to diversify the country\u2019s sources of financing. Maait made the remarks on the sidelines of the Annual Arab Fiscal Forum in Dubai.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN CONTEXT- Investors will want to see clarity on economic policy from officials here<\/strong> \u2014 and an IMF agreement in place \u2014 before there\u2019s significant appetite for a fresh Egyptian paper. Egypt has in recent months sold Panda and Samurai bonds, but has given eurobond markets a wide berth. Maait is regularly asked about a possible GCC issuance \u2014 and his stock answer is \u201cwe\u2019re considering it.\u201d Borrowing in the GCC would be as expensive as a eurobond and will take plenty of time to put together. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The story comes as appetite for riskier (and less-explored corners of) EM debt is picking <\/strong><strong>up:<\/strong> Ivory Coast, Kenya, and even tiny Benin have all taken eurobonds to market in recent weeks. <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Benin<\/strong> last week sold bonds worth <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-02-06\/benin-s-debut-dollar-bonds-oversubscribed-by-more-than-six-times?sref=mmeFTDW1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 750 mn<\/a> \u2014 and the offering was nearly 7x oversubscribed. <\/li>\n<li>Investors reportedly put in orders for almost 2x more than the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/eec75ff1-2a7f-41ac-82e3-bfa2b63bc735\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 2 bn<\/a> <strong>Kenya<\/strong> was looking to raise<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ivory Coast<\/strong>\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-24\/ivory-coast-gets-8-billion-in-demand-for-eurobond-sale?sref=mmeFTDW1\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 2.6 bn<\/a> issuance attracted demand of some USD 8 bn. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>#2- Some banks are scrutinizing their loan books:<\/strong> Several local lenders have reportedly become more wary handing out loans to seven sectors identified as the most vulnerable to defaults amid the FX shortage and soaring inflation, writes <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/mry46cuu\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a>, citing six banking sources. The news outlet isn\u2019t unpacking what it means, but we suspect banks have become more watchful for NPLs and have less appetite for new loans to risky sectors. It names real estate, tourism, fertilizers, animal feed, rebar steel, cement, and ceramics sectors with the highest default risk.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Take its ranking of \u201cdefault risk\u201d with a grain of salt: Reduced appetite for real estate and tourism would be surprising to us. <\/strong>Anecdotally, there\u2019s been flight of capital to real estate as folks have sought to hedge against devaluation by sinking cash into traditional stores of wealth \u2014 gold and hard currency, sure, but also property and cars. Developers with reputations in the market for delivery and fiscal prudence have had great pricing power of late, as have car dealers. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Banks backing away from tourism would be even more shocking:<\/strong> The industry has been booming. We\u2019ve had great tourism numbers in the past 12 months thanks to smart promotion and strong appetite from global travelers for the \u201cEgypt product.\u201d There\u2019s ample evidence that we\u2019re replacing demand initially lost to the outbreak of war in Gaza. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s more: The tourism industry books hard-currency receipts<\/strong> \u2014 what bank doesn\u2019t want those? \u2014 and benefits from smart incentives including an EGP 50 bn or more program minister Ahmed Issa unveiled in December that will see hotels upgrade properties and add room keys.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s natural for bankers to go over loan portfolios for signs of stress<\/strong> in a climate like this. Just don\u2019t take it as a sign that the world is ending\u2026<\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt5\"><\/a> <strong>#3- Egyptians can\u2019t be forced to pay tuition fees in USD<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>The Education Ministry issued a circular on Monday prohibiting private and international K-12 schools from collecting tuition fees in foreign currency from Egyptian students, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/24d9pjrk\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Youm7<\/a> notes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Sound smart:<\/strong> The central bank has effectively made it illegal for one party in Egypt to demand FCY-denominated payment for any other party in the vast majority of cases.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- And while we\u2019re here: No, EgyptAir isn\u2019t going to charge you in USD to book a flight <\/strong><strong>\u2014 so long as that flight originates in Cairo <\/strong>and is booked in Egypt.The national flag carrier carrier isn\u2019t charging in hard currency for flights booked in Egypt that originate here, it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EGYPTAIR\/posts\/pfbid02e9h7LZD4Nmoieme7XXxgH8FdoeD3wwNojMape8dweTiiZxRoWK6Jt22fJEe7BBfsl\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. But you can absolutely expect to pay in foreign currency if they\u2019re booking tickets abroad or for flights that originate in foreign cities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AND- If you\u2019re booking online from Egypt on EgyptAir\u2019s website, you can only choose an <\/strong><strong>Egyptian departure city. <\/strong>The only way we could get a quote on a New York to Cairo return flight was to fire up a VPN that put us in the United States. The currency for the sale? USD, naturally.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Keep it in perspective, though: <\/strong>Few businesses have as much FX exposure as EgyptAir.
