Open<\/strong>AI CEO Sam Altman is looking to raise USD 5-7 tn for a <\/strong>new AI chip project<\/strong>, the Wall Street Journal<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources with knowledge of the plans. (For context, the priciest project ever funded \u2014 Saudi Arabia\u2019s Neom \u2014 stands<\/a> at USD 500 bn.) Altman\u2019s plan to build his own semiconductor factories \u2014 which would cost more than Apple and Microsoft\u2019s combined market caps \u2014 would look to boost the world\u2019s chip-building capacity, particularly the chips required for AI models. <\/p>\n

AI chips are in high demand, but demand \u2014 and supply \u2014 are concentrated among a few <\/strong>companies:<\/strong>There is a current shortage of the chips needed to power generative AI, as Silicon Valley piles into the technology. Nvidia, which produces the most powerful AI chips on the market, is struggling to keep up with demand, and is providing Big Tech the hardware for USD 40k<\/a> per chip. OpenAI needs the hardware to power ChatGPT and to aid the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI), AI systems that will be able to reason as well as human beings, and will eventually become smarter than us.<\/p>\n

Potential investors: <\/strong>Altman has met with officials and businesspeople in the UAE \u2014 including Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan \u2014 and in the US to discuss funding, the Financial Times had reported last month<\/a>. WSJ reports that the CEO is open to letting existing chipmakers run the foundries, agreeing to be a significant customer in that event, while Nvidia may already have agreed to work on custom chips with OpenAI, according to Reuters<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The X chromosome might be tied to the prevalence of autoimmune disease among <\/strong>women: <\/strong>Women could be more prone to developing autoimmune diseases because of molecules carried in the X chromosome that can throw off the immune system, according to a study<\/a> by researchers at Stanford University School of medicine.<\/p>\n

Refresher from high school biology:<\/strong> Women have two X chromosomes, one of which is suppressed by an RNA molecule called Xist \u2014 X-inactive specific transcript. This molecule is important because if the second X chromosome produces proteins freely, it could have other harmful effects. Xist works with proteins to bind to the \u201csilenced\u201d X chromosome, and many of these proteins are also those \u201cthat can be targeted by a misdirected immune system,\u201d the New York Times<\/a> explains. <\/p>\n

How they tested it:<\/strong> The researchers used a strain of mice whose females are prone to lupus in females and injected Xist into the males. The male mice \u2014 which naturally \u201cnever develop severe cases\u201d of lupus \u2014 began developing \u201cmuch worse levels of immune disease,\u201d lead researcher Howard Chang told the New York Times. The study also found that, in humans, when the immune system encounters proteins associated with Xist, it can treat these proteins as enemies and produce more auto-antibodies.<\/p>\n
