So it\u2019s not unusual to feel like you wake up more tired than usual during the colder months, even when you sleep just as many hours as you normally would. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Scientists have the stats to prove it:<\/strong> The sleep study, conducted at Berlin\u2019s St. Hedwig Hospital, found that the 188 participants got an extra hour of shut-eye during the winter, which despite not being statistically significant, meant 30 more minutes of REM activity \u2014 an \u201cessential stage of sleep\u201d which is when our body gets a chance to regenerate. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our circadian rhythm might be to blame:<\/strong> Our bodies are told when to be active and when towind down based on sunlight. When it\u2019s time for bed, we release melatonin but with more darkness during the winter that happens earlier and induces sleepiness. The quality of our sleep is also affected with less sunlight causing more REM sleep in your body\u2019s attempt to make up for it. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Okay, maybe we don\u2019t <\/strong><strong>really<\/strong><strong> need to hibernate in a literal sense,<\/strong><strong>but the winter months <\/strong><strong>call for more sleep.<\/strong> Lots of light exposure to avoid the winter blues and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/01\/22\/health\/sleeping-more-in-winter-research-wellness\/index.html#:~:text=With%20the%20earlier%20production%20of%20melatonin%20during%20winter%2C%20%E2%80%9Cit%20would%20be%20natural%20to%20assume%20that%20a%20healthy%20person%20also%20would%20need%20more%20sleep%20during%20the%20winter%2C%E2%80%9D\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">longer slumbers<\/a> are researcher and professor Carleara Weiss\u2019 recommendations. In tandem, neuroscientist Viviana Greco told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2024\/01\/18\/eye-mask-sleep-cognition-health-benefits\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a> that she recommends wearing an eye mask to bed to make sure you\u2019re in as much darkness as needed for a good night of rest. These two changes could make you more alert throughout the day. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But don\u2019t get caught up in the gimmicky sleep-inducing concoctions though \u2014 like the <\/strong><strong>viral \u201c<\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@drinkolipop\/video\/7327088331828022574\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">sleepy girl mocktail<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u201d<\/strong> Gendered-naming aside, this beverage that claims to have sleep-inducing qualities is a mix of magnesium, seltzer, and tart cherry juice and has been taking the internet by storm \u2014 but experts aren\u2019t so convinced, says the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/01\/17\/well\/live\/sleepy-girl-mocktail-cherry-magnesium.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Times<\/a>. Tart cherries do contain melatonin, but nowhere near the amounts our regular gummy or pill sleep aids have.
