This focus \u2014 which stems from the fact that women have a fixed egg count from birth, while males can continually produce sperm as long as they\u2019re alive \u2014 has traditionally eclipsed the very serious implications that may occur from being an older father.<\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>Men are having children later in life than they used to: <\/strong>Since the 1970s, the number of fathers in the US under 30 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S001502821663090X\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">has gone down by more than 27%<\/a>, while the number of new fathers between 45-49 has ballooned by some 52%, according to a study conducted in 2017.It\u2019s a phenomenon that we witness around the globe from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/3yh9hupu\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Egypt<\/a> to China, and from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-average-age-for-first-time-fathers-shows-steady-rise\/a-61914829#:~:text=The%20average%20age%20of%20men,from%2032.8%20years%20in%202015.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Germany<\/a> to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2017\/09\/25\/national\/social-issues\/number-middle-aged-first-time-fathers-rise-japan\/#:~:text=According%20to%20a%20demographic%20survey,sharply%20from%201%2C121%20in%201995.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Japan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>Sperm count and quality declines as men age: <\/strong>Several studies have shown that age can be a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25462195\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">significant determinant<\/a> in sperm quality. As men get older their sperm count drops, gets slower and a higher percentage is considered damaged or has undergone mutation \u2014 potentially making it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1568163714001226\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">more challenging<\/a> to conceive a child.But even when a couple manages to successfully conceive, the chances that the pregnancy ends in miscarriage or stillbirth <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2022.897101\/full\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">are<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2022.897101\/full\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">higher for women with older partners<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>The risk of physical birth defects grows over time, as well: <\/strong>Similar to women, older fathers are more likely to see babies with congenital abnormalities like cleft lip, a hole in the diaphragm, and even some cancers. The chances of childhood leukemia for example increases by 13% for every five years older the father is, according to this <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28257590\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 study in Denmark.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>The neurological consequences can be serious, too: <\/strong>Kids born to fathers over 40 are nearly six times more likely to have autism than those whose fathers were younger than 30, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16953005\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">researchers have found.<\/a> The risk of children born to men over 50 developing schizophrenia also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8380724\/#:~:text=In%20the%20cohort%20study%20conducted,year%20increase%20in%20paternal%20age\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">goes up by 89%<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>But it\u2019s not all doom and gloom:<\/strong> Some researchers suggest that the potential health risks to newborn babies posed by delayed fatherhood can be somewhat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/health\/robert-de-niro-health-risks-baby-father-b2336825.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">staved off<\/a> by the egg of a younger partner. While these factors are important to consider if you\u2019re deciding whether to have children later in life, it\u2019s not the end all be all.
