{"id":612938,"date":"2024-01-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2024\/01\/04\/the-economy-is-on-track-to-recover-in-2025-says-pm\/"},"modified":"2024-01-04T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T00:00:00","slug":"the-economy-is-on-track-to-recover-in-2025-says-pm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2024\/01\/04\/the-economy-is-on-track-to-recover-in-2025-says-pm\/","title":{"rendered":"The economy is on track to recover in 2025, says PM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"> <strong>Gov\u2019t is feeling upbeat about economic recovery next year:<\/strong> The economy is set to overcome the ongoing crisis and be back on track in 2025, after a series of global events \u2014 from Covid-19 and the war in Ukraine to global inflation \u2014 threw earlier economic progress off track, Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly said during a presser yesterday (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=uWfqTkFiVVY\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">watch, runtime: 33:45<\/a>). <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The country\u2019s subsidy bill has more than tripled over the last two years: <\/strong>The government footed a subsidy bill of EGP 342 bn in 2023, compared to under EGP 100 bn in 2021, Madbouly said, explaining that bigger subsidies coupled with higher interest rates added to the country\u2019s debt burden because subsidies get financed via debt. Here\u2019s a breakdown of last year\u2019s subsidy costs according to Madbouly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bread: EGP 91 bn <\/li>\n<li>Electricity: EGP 90 bn<\/li>\n<li>Diesel: EGP 90 bn <\/li>\n<li>Food rations: EGP 36 bn <\/li>\n<li>Butane cylinders: EGP 35 bn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>That\u2019s not all: <\/strong>The government also coughs up EGP 22 bn a year to subsidize medications doled out to patients at public hospitals. Other subsidies include fertilizers, water, and baby formulas, Madbouly added without providing further details.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Electricity <\/strong><strong>subsidies<\/strong><strong> going away? <\/strong>The government now plans to phase out almost all electricity subsidies over the next five years, Madbouly said. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/6468a17b-84c3-4eff-be44-5ad1a59c8a21\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">electricity price hikes<\/a> thatwent into effect on Monday will reduce the government\u2019s annual expenditure for electricity subsidies by EGP 15 bn to EGP 75 bn. One KWh\/month of electricity costs the government EGP 1.77, Madbouly said.
