Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. <\/strong>Now that the presidential elections are (officially) over, we\u2019re wondering whether we should be bracing ourselves for a slew of news or for more of a slowdown as we creep towards the holiday season. <\/p>\n

THE BIG STORY TODAY<\/strong><\/p>\n

The results are in: President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has been re-elected for a <\/strong>third term in office, securing 89.6% of the vote<\/strong>, National Election Authority (NEA) head Hazem Badawy said in a presser today (watch, runtime: 5:58<\/a>). The elections will see El Sisi remain in office until 2030. Some 39.7 mn out of the total 44.8 mn who turned out to vote cast their ballots for El Sisi. The Republican People Party\u2019s Hazem Omar received 4.5% of valid votes, the Egyptian Social Democratic Party\u2019s Farid Zahran 4%, and Al Wafd Party\u2019s Abdel Sanad Yamama 1.9%.<\/p>\n

The official turnout rate was 66.8%<\/strong> \u2014 well over the 41.05% rate we saw at the 2018 election<\/a> that handed El Sisi his second term. Some 99.9% of ballots cast were valid.<\/p>\n

THE BIG STORY ABROAD<\/strong><\/p>\n

BP is halting all its shipments through the Red Sea<\/strong>, following intensified Houthi attacks<\/a> on ships passing through the waterway, reports Bloomberg<\/a>. Vessels will be rerouted around Africa, rather than the Suez Canal (the primary LNG trade route), adding thousands of extra miles to their journeys, delaying deliveries, and raising costs. Natural gas prices initially jumped 7.9% following BP\u2019s announcement before cooling off, while Brent futures are also up 2.7%. Many other<\/a> companies are considering, or have already followed suit, including CMA CGM, AP Moller-Maersk, MSC, Hapag-Lloyd, and OOCL, according to Reuters<\/a>. <\/p>\n
