An ex-Google engineer is starting a new \u201creligion\u201d \u2014 or cult, or whatever. You in? <\/strong>Besides co-founding Google\u2019s self-driving car program, Anthony Levandowski has founded the Church of Artificial Intelligence. Or re-founded<\/a>. The tech entrepreneur established Way of the Future in 2015, but had to shut the congregation down a few years later.<\/p>\n

Levandowski wants to build a spiritual connection between humans and AI.<\/strong> Despite being kept under the radar for two years, the church amassed 2k followers primed to worship a \u201cGodhead based on Artificial Intelligence developed through computer hardware and software.\u201d<\/p>\n

T<\/strong>his isn\u2019t the first time people have tried to integrate religion and AI. <\/strong>Earlier this year, ChatGPT delivered a 40-minute sermon<\/a> to 300 people at the St. Paul church in Germany. Some tech hubs expressed surprise<\/a> that the AI platform didn\u2019t fabricate a Bible passage for its homily. <\/p>\n

AI is notorious for its <\/strong>errors<\/a><\/strong>, <\/strong>biases<\/a><\/strong>, and sometimes outright <\/strong>manufacture of information<\/a><\/strong>.<\/strong>But Levandowski believes that it could help guide humans morally, ethically, and existentially. <\/p>\n

AI\u2019s omnipresence plays a big role in the AI preacher\u2019s pitch.<\/strong> \u201cAI can see everything, be everywhere, and know everything,\u201d he states<\/a> in Bloomberg\u2019s AI IRL podcast, the same characteristics he says people attribute to God.<\/p>\n

The church was established before the viral <\/strong>rise of generative AI<\/a><\/strong> in an inspired exercise<\/strong> of foresight.<\/strong> \u201cThe idea needs to spread before the technology,\u201d Levandowski told Wired<\/a> in 2017. \u201cThe church is how we spread the word.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why worship it instead of study it? Levandowski hopes to be in its good graces.<\/strong> He believes that as it gains sentience, the way it evolves will no longer be up to us. <\/p>\n

All we can do, he believes, is make ourselves endearing creatures that the AI would want<\/strong> to take care of<\/strong> \u2014 like a cat? \u2014 and the only way to do so is through prayer and worship. \u201cWe would want this intelligence to say, \u2018Humans should still have rights, even though I\u2019m in charge.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

BY THE WAY- <\/strong>Among the AI cleric\u2019s other achievements<\/strong> is receiving a pardon<\/a> by the outgoing US president at the time, Donald Trump, after pleading guilty to stealing trade secrets in 2021.<\/p>\n

Meta\u2019s spokesman, Andy Stone, has been added to Russia\u2019s wanted list<\/strong>following Russian authorities\u2019 classification of Meta as a \u201cterrorist and extremist\u201d organization in October, potentially exposing Russian residents using Meta\u2019s platforms to criminal proceedings, according to the Associated Press<\/a>. Stone was originally added to the wanted list in February 2022, but no official statements were made at the time, and the news only surfaced recently, independent Russian news website Mediazona said<\/a>. <\/p>\n

We may know why:<\/strong> Our hunch tells us that it is because of Stone\u2019s announcement in March 2022<\/a> stating that there would be temporary changes concerning the company\u2019s hate speech policy. This amendment allows users in certain countries to make posts on Facebook and Instagram that incite violence against Russians and Russian soldiers in the context of the Ukraine invasion, according to Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Details regarding Stone\u2019s case are scarce<\/strong>, anyway, with the Russian interior ministry\u2019s database only noting that he is wanted on criminal charges. <\/p>\n
