The Other Black Girl tackles race complexities and the fight for success.<\/strong> Based on Zakiya Dalila Harris\u2019 bestselling book of the same name, the 10-episode series focuses on a relationship between two employees in their mostly-white workplace that posits how racial discrimination still exists. <\/p>\n

Wagner, an all-white publishing house, hires Nella (Sinclair Daniel) who is the only black <\/strong>employee. <\/strong>She faces the pressure of being the \u201cdiversity token\u201d without being too \u201cblack.\u201d When Hazel (Ashleigh Murray) \u2014 who is also black \u2014 joins the company, Nella finds solace, but unease begins to fester due to Hazel\u2019s past and ambition. <\/p>\n

Then things take a turn for the worse.<\/strong> Nella receives threats and warnings to leave Wagner. Eventually, she becomes entangled in uncovering Wagner\u2019s dark history about its previous black editor. <\/p>\n

Hazel and Nella\u2019s dynamic reflects on another duo in the 80s who shared similar <\/strong>experiences.<\/strong> This comes through apparitions and hallucinations that Nella experiences, showing that even though time has gone by, the mentality of racial competitiveness still lives on. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked a lot in the writers\u2019 room about how far we\u2019ve come since the 80s \u2014 or not,\u201d<\/strong>explain Jordan Reddout and Gus Hickey, the writers and producers of the new show. They also add that each pair of women were reacting to the system around them in vastly different decades. But what is scary \u2014 horrific, even \u2014 to see the similarities in their experiences, and what these systems are making them sacrifice just to exist,\u201d they told Variety<\/a>. <\/p>\n
