Is it time to take an ethical stand against Elon Musk\u2019s X policies \u2014 and maybe ditch the <\/strong> platform altogether? <\/strong>Bloomberg Opinion<\/a> \u2019s US tech columnist Dave Lee suggests the answer may be yes. X\u2019s algorithms and several policy decisions, such as disabling the misinformation button<\/a> on content ahead of a handful of elections around the world, are encouraging and promoting the circulation of \u201cabhorrent content,\u201d Lee writes. The platform has also taken a turn for the worse, Lee says, after the introduction of creator payments, which has encouraged users to post content that will get high levels of engagement \u2014 a phenomenon known as \u201cengagement farming.\u201d The biggest problem: The more violent, hateful, or controversial the content, the more likely it will spread like wildfire. <\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t have to be this way: <\/strong> Under its former management, X \u2014 then known as Twitter \u2014 rolled out a feature<\/a> that encouraged users to read articles before retweeting them to avoid the rapid spread of misinformation or a misguided narrative. Co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey had also been working on an experiment<\/a> to hide the number of likes, retweets, and replies on tweets to override the desire \u201cfor the dopamine hit we get from social engagement,\u201d Lee writes. Altogether, \u201csocial networks are molded by the incentives presented to users,\u201d and while what people decide to post can\u2019t be controlled, \u201csites can try to nudge them toward behaving in a certain manner, whether through design choices or reward mechanisms,\u201d he argues.<\/p>\n
