All seven of the economists and analysts we spoke with had expected the central bank to keep rates where they are thanks to easing monthly inflation and the need to retain policy space for a widely anticipated devaluation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> ECONOMY + FX- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> Fresh wage hikes + social support as inflation accelerates: <\/strong> Ittihadiya <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/9b182e4c-7409-4375-b92f-82f32198f67c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> a raft of social support measures that are expected to cost around EGP 30 bn this week, and will be financed from a contingency budget fund, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> A public sector minimum wage hike <\/strong> that will raise monthly minimum salaries to EGP 4k, from EGP 3.5k currently. <\/li>\n<li><strong> An income tax break for lower earners <\/strong> that will raise the exemption threshold to EGP 45k from EGP 36k currently.<\/li>\n<li><strong> Increased support to vulnerable pensioners <\/strong> covered by the Takaful and Karama program that will see payments increased by 15% in addition to a EGP 600 exceptional stimulus payment. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong> The government is set to reopen its expat car import initiative for a three-month period <\/strong> under <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/edition\/am\/245f910f-52bf-46bc-8e9c-1272f79a9305\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a draft law approved<\/a> by the Madbouly cabinet.
