Goldman\u2019s outlook recognized that the underperformance of EM assets in 2018 was due to \u201clower-than-expected growth in EM markets.\u201d GS sees the outlook for EM improving in 2019, noting that emerging markets are in the early phases of a longer-term expansion.<\/p>\n<p><b>EM equities are \u201ctrading at an attractive 25% discount to DM<\/b> equities while offering potentially higher expected earnings growth.\u201d Emerging economies are in the \u201cearly stages of recovery with room to run\u201d \u2014 at the same time as US growth will likely remain moderate.<\/p>\n<p><b>Goldman also likes EM currencies<\/b>, saying they\u2019re undervalued by as much as 23%.<\/p>\n<p><b>Goldman sees China as the biggest EM risk factor: <\/b>China is the \u201cbiggest risk to our view in both 2019 and over the medium- to long-term,\u201d singling out \u201cvast credit creation in recent years,\u201d which it says will present risks as \u201cgrowth transitions to a lower trend level and rotates from investment- to consumption-led.\u201d With trade wars looming, China\u2019s 6.9% growth forecast (already its lowest since the \u201890s) looks iffy. Potential risks are considerable in 2019 and will likely increase by years end.<\/p>\n<p><b>Geopolitical risk will remain high<\/b> and likely be key driver of drawdowns in the markets in 2019.
