<\/a> President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met yesterday with IMF Director Christine Lagarde to discuss Egypt\u2019s economic reform program<\/b>, according to an Ittihadiya statement<\/a>. Lagarde reiterated the IMF\u2019s commitment to Egypt and spoke positively about the impact of the economic reforms, according to a statement published by the IMF<\/a>. Lagarde also noted the importance of addressing private sector reform, noting that there still exist \u201cconstraints\u201d to its development. She also stressed the need to provide \u201cadequate resources are available for social protection.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also met with senior White House adviser Ivanka Trump<\/b> to discuss the empowerment of women, according to an Ittihadiya statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t all friendly banter during El Sisi\u2019s trip though:<\/b> Secretary of State Mike Pompeo threatened the use of sanctions against Egypt should it follow through with the purchase<\/a> of Russian aircraft. \u201cWe\u2019ve made it clear that if those systems were to be purchased, the CAATSA statute would require sanctions on the regime,\u201d Pomepo said at a Senate hearing, according to defence publication Janes<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019ve received assurances from them that they understand that, and I\u2019m very hopeful that they will decide to not move forward with that acquisition,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
