EGX Chairman Mohamed Farid will deliver the keynote address on expanding the role of capital markets in Egypt\u2019s economy. <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2019\/4\/2904.pdf\">Tap or click here to view the preliminary agenda for the event (pdf)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Monthly inflation figures<\/b> are due out on Wednesday. Annual headline inflation accelerated to 14.4% in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/11\/inflation-back-on-the-rise-throwing-continued-easing-cycle-to-doubt\/\">February<\/a>, up from 12.7% the previous month.<\/li>\n<li><b>AmCham is holding its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/mail\/agenda10419.html\">annual HR Day<\/a><\/b> at the Cairo Marriott Hotel on 10 April.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>\u2026and abroad:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The IMF and World Bank are holding their <a href=\"https:\/\/meetings.imf.org\/en\/2019\/Spring\">spring meetings<\/a><\/b> on 12-14 April in Washington, DC.<\/li>\n<li><b>The UK will, theoretically, leave the European Union on Friday<\/b>, 12 April. Prime Minister Theresa May has asked for a three-month extension to 30 June. <\/li>\n<li><b>First quarter earnings season gets underway in the United States<\/b> at week\u2019s end as JPMorgan and Wells Fargo report results. The expectation, as we noted last week, is for corporate earnings in the US and Europe to fall in 1Q for the first time since 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Fifteen of the startups the WEF thinks will make a dent in the Arab world are from Egypt. <\/b>That is according to its list of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/widgets.weforum.org\/arabstartups\/\">the 100 Arab start-ups shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution<\/a>.\u201d We can\u2019t say we agree with every choice, but still\u2026 The list came out to mark the group\u2019s annual meeting on the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2021\/7\/78.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a><b> The Donald\u2019s nominee is the new president of the World Bank:<\/b> David Malpass was named to the post this weekend by the institution\u2019s executive directors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2019\/04\/05\/world-banks-executive-directors-select-david-malpass-13th-president-of-the-world-bank-group\">according to a statement<\/a>. Malpass, previously undersecretary for international affairs at Treasury, starts his five-year term on Tuesday. Despite his easy run for the position, Malpass has been met with skepticism from many over his views on the bank\u2019s traditional goals and policies, including multilateralism and combating climate change, James Politi writes for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/96738e5c-5714-11e9-91f9-b6515a54c5b1\">the Financial Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Malpass could visit Egypt<\/b>, we were told in Washington, DC, at the end of AmCham\u2019s annual Doorknock mission. Malpass has identified Egypt as a \u201cpriority country\u201d and the World Bank is in talks with Egypt for a \u201cdigital infrastructure development loan\u201d and a separate USD 200 mn to support SMEs. We have chapter and verse on that and more in this morning\u2019s Spotlight, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>The Donald has called on the US Federal Reserve to cut rates<\/b> and restart its \u2018quantitative easing\u2019 stimulus program, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7d100006-57b1-11e9-a3db-1fe89bedc16e\">according to the FT<\/a>. Trump also raised eyebrows over the weekend as he suggested he wants to nominate loyalists Herman Cain and Stephen Moore to the Fed\u2019s board. The move would undermine the Fed\u2019s position as one of the world\u2019s most powerful independent financial institutions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/06\/upshot\/fed-moore-cain-risk-partisanship.html\">the NYT argues<\/a>, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/79f2e432-57a8-11e9-91f9-b6515a54c5b1\">FT notes elsewhere<\/a> that Friday\u2019s jobs report in the US \u2014 which found cooler wage growth in March and more job growth than expected \u2014 will leave the Fed in a \u201cpatient mood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>March may have marked the end of the tightening cycle for emerging market central banks<\/b> after the month saw just three net rate cuts in 37 markets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-emerging-rates-graphic\/keeping-it-easy-emerging-central-banks-keep-cutting-idUSKCN1RG1ZX\">Reuters says<\/a>. March was the second consecutive month of net rate cuts, after \u201cpolicymakers battled the fallout from a strong USD, rising inflation and softer currencies which dominated most of 2018.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>SIGN OF THE TIMES- Norway\u2019s sovereign wealth fund is backing away from emerging market bonds <\/b>in a move that\u2019s getting attention from both the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/782bd1be-57ac-11e9-a3db-1fe89bedc16e\">FT<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/norway-cuts-emerging-market-bonds-from-sovereign-wealth-fund-11554485520\">WSJ<\/a>. Christian Maggio, the head of EM strategy at TD Securities in London says the change \u201cwon\u2019t cause won\u2019t cause seismic waves in EMs and, under certain circumstances, may even go mostly unnoticed\u201d because the anticipated USD 12 bn cut to holdings is \u201ca mangeable sum in the multi-tn USD market.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>In regional news this morning:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Saudi Aramco is preparing for a \u201cjumbo\u201d bond issuance this week<\/b> that could be worth at least USD 10 bn, <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-04-05\/saudi-oil-giant-set-for-big-debt-deal-touted-by-jpmorgan-s-dimon?srnd=premium-middle-east\">according to Bloomberg<\/a><\/b>. <\/li>\n<li><b>Clashes are taking place south of Tripoli<\/b> after eastern commander Gen. Khalifa Haftar ordered his forces to advance on the Libyan capital last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-47840031\">the BBC reports<\/a>. Egypt, which backs Haftar\u2019s Libyan National Army, has called for him to end the offensive (more on this in this morning\u2019s Diplomacy, below).<\/li>\n<li><b>Thousands of people returned to the streets of Algeria over the weekend<\/b> demanding further government resignations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-algeria-protests\/hundreds-of-thousands-of-algerians-march-for-sweeping-change-idUSKCN1RH155\">Reuters reports<\/a>.
