We have highlights of the budget in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>AmCham\u2019s annual \u2018Doorknock\u2019 lobbying campaign <\/b>gets underway this morning in Washington, DC and runs through Friday. Some <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/events-activities\/missions\/missions-to-the-us\/33\/March-2019\/206\/delegates-profiles\">35 senior business leaders<\/a><\/u> are set to talk up Egypt in meets with members of Congress, Trump administration officials and others in DC. We\u2019ll have more from the road in the days ahead.<\/p>\n<p><b>President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry are in Tunisia<\/b> for an Arab League summit. Shoukry traveled to Tunisia <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/31\/shoukry-lands-in-tunisia-for-arab-league-summit\/\">late last week<\/a><\/u> for preparatory meetings ahead of the summit. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL8N21I0E8\">Reuters<\/a><\/u> has more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Keep an eye today on US manufacturing data<\/b>, the next \u201ccheckpoint\u201d for the global doomsdayers, the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fb199004-5165-11e9-b401-8d9ef1626294\">Financial Times<\/a><\/u> suggests.<\/p>\n<p><b>There\u2019s no lack of local market data coming up<\/b> in the next few days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The EGX brokerage league table <\/b>for Marchshould be out today. EFG Hermes extended its spell at top of the table <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/03\/efg-hermes-tops-brokerage-league-for-february\/\">last month<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li><b>The Markit \/ Emirates NBD purchasing managers\u2019 index for March <\/b>is expected on Thursday. The index, which surveys non-oil business activity in Egypt, fell to a 17-month low in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/06\/egypts-non-oil-business-activity-falls-to-17-month-low-pmi\/\">last month\u2019s reading<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li><b>The CBE\u2019s net foreign reserves position <\/b>is due out sometime this week. Reserves climbed to USD 44.060 bn <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/05\/egypts-fx-reserves-reach-usd-44-060-bn-at-end-february\/\">at the end of February<\/a><\/u>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Total vehicle sales<\/b> for March, and performance by brand, should be out within days.<\/li>\n<li><b>Egypt\u2019s monthly inflation figures<\/b>, from both the central bank and CAPMAS, are expected on 10 April. Annual headline inflation accelerated to 14.4% in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/11\/inflation-back-on-the-rise-throwing-continued-easing-cycle-to-doubt\/\">February<\/a><\/u>, up from 12.7% the previous month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Renaissance Capital will hold its annual Egypt Investors Conference in Cape Town<\/b> on 9-10 April. The event will see senior management from leading Egyptian companies meet one-on-one with South African investors with AUM north of USD 20 bn.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>EM bonds, the gift that keeps on giving: <\/b>Global funds remain bullish on emerging market bonds, which \u2014 having returned 5.3% in 1Q2019 \u2014 are on track for their best quarter since 2012, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-31\/emerging-market-bonds-still-a-buy-for-goldman-asset-t-rowe?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg writes<\/a><\/u>. Fund managers are confident that EM debt will continue appreciating as the US Federal Reserve u-turns on raising rates and China\u2019s economy stabilizes. <b>It\u2019s good news for Egypt <\/b>as the Finance Ministry <u><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/31\/egypt-to-take-eur-denominated-eurobond-issuance-to-market-next-month\/\">looks to hit the road<\/a><\/u> with an EUR-denominated eurobond offering this month,<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <b>Wait, the world may not be ending? <\/b>The global financial press has for more than a year now been practically salivating at the prospect of (a) an end to the 10-year-long bull market for US equities (b) the US economy falling into recession or, better still, option (c): the end of the bull run somehow tipping the US into recession.<\/p>\n<p><b>The world is not ending, Exhibit #1: <\/b>Enter Gywn Davies writing for the FT, who with finesse and rigor that \u201cthe great bull run may be over, but that does not mean that a great bear market will inevitably follow.\u201d Instead, he suggests, there\u2019s a perfectly solid model that \u201cpredicts that <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/4f941406-5157-11e9-b401-8d9ef1626294\">total US equity returns will be about 4-5% per annum in nominal terms in the next three years<\/a><\/u> \u2014 much lower than recently, but still positive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>The world is not ending, Exhibit #2: <\/b>\u201cAs we move into the second half of the year, this narrative of global growth potentially causing problems here in the U.S. is going to shift to a stabilization of global growth and then more of a focus on things like earnings,\u201d argues the co-head of strategy at PNC Financial Services in an interview with <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/03\/31\/global-growth-fears-overblown-even-as-growth-to-stay-sluggish-pnc.html\">CNBC<\/a><\/u>. <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/china-factory-activity-rebounded-strongly-in-march-11554002297\">China<\/a><\/u> and Europe are bottoming out, he argues, and all the gnashing of teeth about the inverted yield curve in the US is overblown.<\/p>\n<p><b>The one thing to worry about now: FOMO.<\/b> Investors are piling into stocks this year because of the fear of missing out on the 2019 rebound in equities, the <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/fear-of-missing-out-pushes-investors-toward-stocks-11554030001\">WSJ<\/a><\/u> suggests.<\/p>\n<p>In international news worth knowing this morning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Erdogan hits election setback: <\/b>The party of Turkey\u2019s Islamist president lost Ankara and appeared ready to do the same in Istanbul despite two months of \u201crelentless campaigning \u2026 which he described as a \u2018matter of survival\u2019 for Turkey.\u201d (<u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-turkey-election\/erdogan-appears-to-concede-istanbul-defeat-after-ankara-loss-idUSKCN1RB0QW\">Reuters<\/a><\/u>)<\/li>\n<li><b>Algeria\u2019s Bouteflika is hanging on by his fingertips: <\/b>Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has replaced 21 of his government\u2019s 27 ministers in a bid to calm demonstrators calling for his resignation, but some are still speculating he could announce his resignation this week.
