{"id":602409,"date":"2019-03-27T03:55:51","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T03:55:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2019\/03\/27\/what-were-tracking-on-27-march-2019\/"},"modified":"2019-03-27T03:55:51","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T03:55:51","slug":"what-were-tracking-on-27-march-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/egypt\/2019\/03\/27\/what-were-tracking-on-27-march-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"What we\u2019re tracking on 27 March 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a><b> Tomorrow is interest rate day, and we think it safe to now say the consensus is for a rate cut.<\/b> Here\u2019s our logic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adding new predictions from leading research houses to our <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/24\/enterprise-poll-cbe-could-cut-rates-by-up-to-100-bps-this-thursday\/\">poll of analysts<\/a>, we now count seven of 11 houses as calling a rate cut of up to 100 bps (one percentage point). <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-egypt-cenbank-poll\/egypts-central-bank-seen-maintaining-key-rates-reuters-poll-idUSKCN1R60HC\">Reuters<\/a>\u2019 poll earlier this week had eight out of 12 economists expecting the central bank to keep rates unchanged. <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-26\/world-s-deepest-rate-cuts-beckon-in-egypt-after-dovish-fed-pivot?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg<\/a> said overnight that \u201cmost economists\u201d it surveyed predict a 100 bps rate cut. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Needless to say, a rate cut would be good for businesses <\/b>that have delayed much-needed capex because borrowing costs are simply insane \u2014 credit-card level interest rates to finance an investment in your business makes no sense.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s the logic: <\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, <b>we import inflation<\/b> \u2014 and the 3.6% appreciation of the EGP since the start of the year is keeping that in check;<\/li>\n<li>Second, <b>the US Fed handed us a gift <\/b>by foreshadowing zero rate cuts this year, meaning Egypt will remain comparatively attractive to the carry trade after a rate cut (a good thing when it comes to keeping the EGP in balance); <\/li>\n<li>Third, it\u2019s now or \u2026 late 3Q, because <b>the coming months are going to see inflation tick up<\/b>. Ramadan (May), subsidy cuts (around 1 July), the summer months in general (coupled with Eid vacations) and back-to-school season (starting in September) are all inflationary and promote demand for greenbacks at the expense of the EGP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Inflation could keep rates on hold in most other major African economies:<\/b> The central banks of Africa\u2019s other largest economies are also deciding on rates these days, and nearly all of them are expected to keep rates on hold due to \u201cupside risks in inflation,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-26\/what-african-central-bankers-will-discuss-in-the-next-seven-days\">Bloomberg<\/a> says in a separate piece.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-25\/global-trade-takes-sharp-turn-down-with-biggest-drop-since-2009?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/3\/2810.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>There\u2019s no consensus in global markets about which way is up:<\/b> European shares were okay and US futures up yesterday, but Asian shares are slipping this morning as \u201cinvestors tried to come to terms with a sharp shift in US bond markets and the implications for the world\u2019s top economy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/asian-shares-lose-steam-as-investors-grapple-with-u-s-recession-risk-idUSKCN1R803G\">Reuters<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><b>Bonds continue to be a concern though:<\/b> The yield on 10-year US Treasuries is still in an inverted status against short-term paper. This is concerning investors who see it as a sign of recession (more on this in this morning\u2019s Macro Picture, below).<\/p>\n<p><b>And you may not want to look at the latest trade data\u2026<\/b> Global trade fell 1.8% in the first quarter of 2019 \u2014 the biggest drop since May 2009, according to World Trade Monitor stats <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-03-25\/global-trade-takes-sharp-turn-down-with-biggest-drop-since-2009?srnd=premium-middle-east\">seen by Bloomberg<\/a>.
