But this video from The Guardian (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/video\/2019\/mar\/14\/why-your-memories-cant-be-trusted-video\">watch, runtime: 07:35<\/a>) tells us that we reconstruct, rather than relive, our past experiences every time we access them. By changing and adapting the narratives themselves \u2014 \u2018reconsolidation\u2019 in psychologist-speak \u2014 we can become vulnerable to memory manipulation.<\/p>\n<p><b>Research has shown that new information can enter a person\u2019s memory modifying what we remember of the original experience.<\/b> This could be through media coverage, for instance, or through skilled questioning by a professional. This understanding of why our memories really can\u2019t be trusted has serious consequences for the criminal justice system, so heavily reliant as it is on witness testimony.
