Convicted in New York on Tuesday on ten criminal counts of narcotics trafficking and money laundering, Joaqu\u00edn Guzm\u00e1n Loera (\u201cEl Chapo\u201d) may spend the rest of his life in a US prison, but his legacy \u2014 and the influence of his deadly Sinaloa cartel \u2014 lives on in Mexico.<\/p>\n

The larger than life figure who powered an empire:<\/b> What emerges from his trial is an almost-too-fantastic story of daring smuggling operations using tunnels, trains, and even jalape\u00f1o cans, an alleged payoff to Mexico\u2019s then-president-elect Enrique Pe\u00f1a Nieto, and two prison escapes by a man who started life as a \u201csemi-literate farmhand\u201d and then rose<\/a> to make at least USD 14 bn in profits from the illicit business. But what is equally clear is that Guzm\u00e1n was, in many ways, a highly astute businessman, who along with other cartel bosses established a \u201cprofit-sharing model to protect against [narcotics] seizures by law enforcement\u201d and whose subordinates referred to the cartel\u2019s \u201cdetailed infrastructure, accounting ledgers, supply-chain issues and the need to \u2018protect the capital of the investors.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Mexico\u2019s narcotics war is nowhere near over.<\/b> Despite Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador renewing the country\u2019s fight<\/a> against the trade of illicit substances, cartel and Mexican security experts and investigative reporters argue that it is actually going from strength to strength. An estimated USD 19-39 bn in profit from illicit substances are returned to Mexico every year, and increasing trade is also fueling a spate in violence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
