Macron visited Upper Egypt yesterday. Look for economic ties, regional cooperation, migration and the war against terror to feature on the agenda. Again, we have more in Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>The EGX led Mideast shares higher yesterday <\/b>on news that telecom giant Veon is looking to take private the EGX-listed emerging markets telecom operator Global Telecom Holding, which has operations in Algeria, Bangladesh and Pakistan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-01-27\/mideast-shares-climb-with-earnings-deals-in-focus-inside-em\">Bloomberg notes<\/a>. \u201cEgypt is finally catching up with the risk-off trade emerging markets are witnessing,\u201d EFG Hermes\u2019 senior macro strategy analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/mideast-stock\/mideast-stocks-egypts-egx30-index-rises-most-gulf-markets-firm-idUSL5N1ZR0GQ\">Mohammed al-Hajj told Reuters<\/a>. More on that, too, in Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>But EM inflows remain weak, the IIF says: <\/b>Investors are continuing to avoid making new investments in EM assets outside of China, according to a report from the Institute of International Finance (IIF). The institute says that EMs \u2014 including key economies such as India and South Africa \u2014 have failed to see a healthy rebound of inflows following the 2018 market sell-off.<\/p>\n<p><b>But 2019 may not be hideous: Overall market sentiment is positive<\/b>, the IIF says, writing that anecdotes abound for a recovery in EM non-resident portfolio flows. \u201cAgainst the backdrop of the violent EM sell-off last year\u2026 the combination of solid growth and a cautious Fed should be positive for risk assets,\u201d they write.<\/p>\n<p><b>Read that against two of the best \u201c2019 will be a bad year\u201d stories that we\u2019ve seen this month<\/b>,both published yesterday in the Financial Times:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/5bae92a4-1f0a-11e9-b126-46fc3ad87c65\"><b>Will we see a rerun of a market meltdown, just like in 2016?<\/b><\/a>The story makes it clear to us all that our fate this year rests heavily on US and Chinese macroeconomic policies and the prospects of a trade war. And unlike in 2016, when a similar basket of factors \u201cunleashed a major extension of the equity bull market,\u201d it\u2019s not likely this time around. We may not be heading for a \u201cglobal recession and major bear market\u201d right now, but we\u2019re equally unlikely to see a \u201creturn of the golden period that followed 2016.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/43d5e972-2098-11e9-b2f7-97e4dbd3580d\"><b>Another tech bubble could be about to burst<\/b><\/a>, Rana Foroohar warns in the salmon-colored paper, likening what\u2019s happening today in Big Tech to the dotcom boom and bust at the turn of the century. \u201cThen, as now, we were at the late stages of a credit cycle, with too much money chasing too little value. And then, like now, investors were counting on a spate of hot IPOs to pour a little more kerosene on markets that were clearly over-inflated.\u201d Her concerns are very developed-market-focused, but worth reading even here in EM.<\/p>\n<p><b>Global tech news is blowing up our newsfeed.<\/b> Among the highlights and lowlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Facebook is going to somehow integrate WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger<\/b>, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/01\/25\/technology\/facebook-instagram-whatsapp-messenger.html\">New York Times<\/a>. Even if that\u2019s on the back end, the implications for user privacy are \u2026 mildly concerning?<\/li>\n<li><b>Big guns going after Slack ahead of its IPO: <\/b>Workplace messaging app Slack is facing a narrower \u201cwindow of opportunity,\u201d Richard Waters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c91a5136-1fa3-11e9-b126-46fc3ad87c65\">writes for the FT<\/a>, raising concerns that service (which happens to power conversations here at Enterprise) faces headwinds from Microsoft Teams and Google Hangouts.<\/li>\n<li><b>Apple will report its earnings tomorrow<\/b>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/apple-cant-just-phone-it-in-11548597600\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> thinks the road ahead for our favorite tech company is rockier than it would first appear after it recently re-stated its guidance.<\/li>\n<li><b>Seven lessons from Generation Z for surviving in a tech-obsessed world<\/b>, per Christopher Mims in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/generation-zs-7-lessons-for-surviving-in-our-tech-obsessed-world-11548478811?mod=hp_lead_pos7\">Wall Street Journal<\/a>.
