<\/a> Egypt to host AFCON 2019, Mo Salah named top Africa player: <\/b>Egypt was selected to host the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the second time this summer, after receiving 16 out of 17 votes, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced yesterday<\/a>. The competition will be held from 15 June to 13 July 2019.<\/p>\n

Egypt was up against South Africa for the hosting gig<\/b>, but South Africans were reportedly not too keen<\/a> on hosting the (expensive) tournament for the second time in less than a decade. This year\u2019s edition of the championship will see 24 African teams competing for the title \u2014 which Egypt has taken home seven times \u2014 up from 16 teams previously.<\/p>\n

The story is, far and away, topping coverage of Egypt in the foreign press<\/b>, with Reuters<\/a>, the BBC<\/a>, CNN<\/a> and Goal<\/a> among those taking note.<\/p>\n

The story topped coverage on the airwaves<\/b> with Sports Minister Ashraf Sobhy telling Al Hayah Al Youm that documents to host the tournament were prepared in less than two days before bringing them forward to CAF (watch, runtime: 02:25)<\/a>. Salah is now the fourth player to claim back-to-back wins of the prestigious award, alongside African legends El Hadji Diouf, Samuel Eto\u2019o and Yaya Toure. \"I\u2019m proud to win it twice, I must thank my family and my team mates, and I dedicate this award to my country, Egypt,\" Salah said after accepting the award (watch, runtime 4:02<\/a>).
