The bottom line so far: Not a lot of news, but a lot of posturing (much of it half-hearted). The story is all over <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL8N23V6CV\">Reuters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-06-25\/unlikely-settler-palestinian-duo-eyes-big-bucks-at-bahrain-meet\">Bloomberg<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ef08913e-9431-11e9-b7ea-60e35ef678d2\">Financial Times<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/25\/world\/middleeast\/israel-palestinian-peace-kushner.html\">New York Times<\/a> if you like. The system is meant to help security officials spot would-be troublemakers and to close off all exits within seconds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2018\/11\/Jerome-Powell-web.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a><b> Powell remains ambivalent about the prospects of a July rate cut:<\/b> US Federal Reserve Chairman Jay Powell has admitted that stalling economic growth is increasing the likelihood of a rate cut in the coming months, but said that Fed officials haven\u2019t decided whether to make the move at the next FOMC meeting in July. In a speech at the Council of Foreign Relations yesterday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/698afd6e-976d-11e9-8cfb-30c211dcd229\">Powell warned<\/a> that \u201cthe picture has changed\u201d over the past two months due to \u201cgreater uncertainty\u201d over trade and \u201crenewed concerns\u201d about global growth.<\/p>\n<p><b>But that doesn\u2019t mean the Fed will act:<\/b> Powell cautioned against any knee-jerk policy responses to current conditions, throwing expectations of a July rate cut into doubt. \u201cWe are mindful that monetary policy should not overreact to any individual data point or short-term swing in sentiment,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-treasury-yields-slip-11561449091\">he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Media reaction has been bipolar:<\/b> If you\u2019re expecting any journalistic consensus about what Powell\u2019s speech actually meant, you\u2019re going to be disappointed. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/698afd6e-976d-11e9-8cfb-30c211dcd229\">The FT<\/a> claims that his statements \u201creinforce market expectations of an imminent rate cut.\u201d But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketwatch.com\/story\/powell-says-the-fed-is-grappling-with-whether-to-cut-interest-rates-2019-06-25\">MarketWatch<\/a> is saying precisely the opposite, claiming that he \u201cdampened market hopes\u201d that easing was back on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p><b>Wall Street evidently preferred MarketWatch\u2019s interpretation of events:<\/b> The S&P500, Dow Jones and Nasdaq all slumped following Powell\u2019s comments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-treasury-yields-slip-11561449091\">the WSJ says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Treat EM equities with caution, Barclays suggests:<\/b> Emerging-market currencies and fixed-income funds <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/06\/25\/the-fed-hasnt-eased-yet-but-emerging-markets-are-already-feeling-the-benefits\/\">may be doing well<\/a> off the back of anticipated Fed easing, but the same cannot be said for the equity markets. Emmanuel Cau, head of European equity strategy at Barclays, tells Bloomberg that trade tensions and the weakening Chinese economy are currently \u201cconstraining\u201d EM equities \u2014 and advises investors to treat the asset class with caution (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/videos\/2019-06-25\/we-advise-cautious-allocation-in-emerging-markets-says-barclays-s-cau-video\">watch, runtime: 2:25<\/a>).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>A conversation we should be having: When is a company simply \u2026 too damn big? <\/b>We\u2019re not going to argue there should be a cap on a company\u2019s organic growth (unless, like a certain social media player, said company starts to seriously misbehave), but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-allergan-m-a-abbvie\/abbvie-looks-beyond-humira-with-63-billion-deal-for-botox-maker-allergan-idUSKCN1TQ15X\">AbbVie\u2019s USD 63 bn acquisition of Allergan<\/a> (maker of everything from eyecare products to Botox) has us wondering whether megamergers like this are really in the interest of the body politic. And yes, we include the wider business community in the body politic.
