<\/a> Former president Mohamed Morsi is dead after a heart attack in court:<\/b> Former president Mohamed Morsi, 67, died yesterday after suffering a heart attack during a court appearance in an espionage trial, state media reported<\/a>. Morsi, a senior Muslim Brotherhood member who was elected president after throwing his name in the hat as a \u201cspare\u201d to the Ikhwan\u2019s preferred candidate, reportedly lost consciousness during the hearing and was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital. He had been speaking for approximately five minutes at the time of his collapse.<\/p>\n

There was no \u201cevidence of marks or injuries\u201d on Morsi\u2019s body<\/b>, but a full autopsy will be conducted and court footage examined, Prosecutor General Nabil Sadek said in a statement<\/a> (English translation<\/a>) late yesterday, confirming that he had ordered a full investigation opened. Investigators have requested Morsi\u2019s medical file and will prepare a report on his death.<\/p>\n

What was he on trial for, anyway? <\/b>Morsi was in court yesterday on espionage charges in a case related to Hamas. At the time of his death, he was also serving a 20-year prison sentence for the killing of protesters in 2012 and 25 years in another espionage case related to Qatar. A earlier death sentence in the so-called \u201cprison-break\u201d case of 2011 had been overturned.<\/p>\n

The Muslim Brotherhood is calling for a \u201cmass funeral\u201d:<\/b> The Ikhwan, still going on in the language of revolution, described Morsi\u2019s death as \u201cfull-fledged murder\u201d in a statement on its website<\/a> that called for mass turnout at a funeral in Egypt. The Ikhwan is also calling for protests at Egyptian embassies abroad.<\/p>\n

No pilgrimage site:<\/b> Morsi was buried in east Cairo, Sky News Arabia<\/a> reported this morning, citing unnamed security officials. Authorities had reportedly refused to allow Morsi to be buried in his family\u2019s plot, Abdullah Mohamed Morsi told Reuters<\/a>. The AFP<\/a> had reported that Morsi would be buried in Nasr City.<\/p>\n

Reaction from international political figures <\/b>has been muted \u2014 no major western figure had commented on the death as of dispatch time this morning.<\/p>\n

But the usual suspects are bellowing<\/b>, naturally enough. Turkish<\/b> President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, an ally of Morsi, called him a \u201cmartyred brother\u201d<\/a> and offered condolences to the people of Egypt. Qatar<\/b>\u2019s Tamim bin Hamad, another Ikhwan supporter, turned to Twitter<\/a> to offer \u201cbrotherly\u201d condolences to \u201cthe people of Egypt.\u201d Hamas<\/b>, meanwhile, praised Morsi for his \u201cunforgettable and brave\u201d policies toward Gaza during his time in office.<\/p>\n

Amnesty International <\/b>has called for<\/b><\/a> an \u201cimmediate investigation\u201d<\/b> into Morsi\u2019s death, saying the incident raises concerns on his treatment in custody. More on Twitter<\/a> and on the organization's website<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Grasping at straws: <\/b>A US professor positioned as a former advisor to the State Department on political Islam told the NYT<\/a> that Morsi\u2019s death \u201cwas resonating beyond the Brotherhood with other Egyptians who voted for him or \u2018have concerns about the current government\u2019s human rights record.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The story is everywhere in the foreign press:<\/b> The Wall Street Journal<\/a> describes Morsi as a \u201ccontroversial figure\u201d whose rise to power epitomized Egypt\u2019s brief period of political freedom. Bloomberg<\/a> meanwhile says the rule of the \u201cbespectacled and portly Muslim Brotherhood foot-soldier\u201d was defined by \u201cdangerous polarization.\u201d The BBC\u2019s Lyse Doucet warned that his death is \u201ccertain to inflame passions among his supporters and allies in Egypt and beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n

Morsi got coverage on all of the major talk shows last night. <\/b>Amr Adib made Morsi\u2019s death the centerpiece of his show (watch, runtime: 4:08<\/a>). Al Hayah Al Youm\u2019s Khaled Abu Bakr (watch, runtime: 5:56<\/a>) chimed in, and Masaa DMC\u2019s Eman El Hosary (watch, runtime: 1:56<\/a>) gave the Ikhwani short shrift, limiting herself to reading out the prosecutor general\u2019s statement (above).<\/p>\n

Morsi was elected president in 2012<\/b>, narrowly defeating former Air Force commander Ahmed Shafiq in a tense run-off election. His rule was marred by political and economic turbulence. Power outages and gasoline shortages were common, and a controversial declaration that he was essentially above the law provoked large demonstrations against his rule.
