<\/a> Is The Donald about to ask us to give up part of Sinai to the Palestinians under his \u2018Mideast\u2019 peace plan?<\/b> For two decades now, we have scoffed at conspiracy theories that claimed unnamed nefarious (usually American) forces were plotting to dismember Egypt. It\u2019s the stuff of the tin-foil-hat brigade. But the Palestinians now claim that Trump\u2019s plan would do just that, only on a slightly smaller scale.<\/p>\n

Trump \u201cenvisages an expansion of Gaza into part of northern Egypt<\/b>, under Egyptian control,\u201d Reuters reports<\/a>, citing an unnamed Palestinian official who claims to have been briefed on the plan. \u201cPalestinians would be left with a smaller share of the West Bank and some areas on the outskirts of Jerusalem and no control over their borders. Western and Arab sources confirmed the outline of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

That can\u2019t be real \u2026 right? <\/b>Jason Greenblatt, \u201cTrump\u2019s Middle East envoy, said \u2018rumours\u2019 about an expansion into Egypt\u2019s Sinai desert were false,\u201d Reuters adds.<\/p>\n

But the Palestinians are adamant that it is: <\/b>\u201cThe essential part is Gaza: where 2 million Palestinians are shut into a strip between Israel and Egypt,\u201d Reuters continues. \u201cThe idea is to expand it into the north of Egypt\u2019s Sinai peninsula, creating an area where Palestinians can live and work under Egyptian control. \u2018The plan envisions Gaza stretching from Rafah (its southern border) to El Arish and some parts of Sinai. This area will be a Palestinian expansion in which Palestinians can reside,\u2019 the Palestinian leader said.\u201d Reuters claims that \u201cWestern and Arab sources confirmed the outline of the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is pouring cold water on the reports<\/b>, saying last night<\/a> that Egypt would never do anything against the interests of the Palestinians and hinting, \u201cYou are asking what\u2019s the story and what does Sisi have in mind, and will he give up anything to anyone. \u2026 Can you imagine that I would give something up?\u201d<\/p>\n

Would you trust this guy to sell you a peace plan? <\/b>Axios is teasing a TV interview<\/a> it has filmed with Jared Kushner (the architect of the \u2018peace plan\u2019 and The Donald\u2019s son-in-law). Worthy excerpts: He\u2019s uncertain the Palestinians can govern themselves<\/a> and he has a really weird way of saying the facts of the plan will (eventually) speak for themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When will we know more? <\/b>The plan is set to be released in late June, likely at (or in the run-up to) a US conference on the \u2018economic dimension\u2019 of Trump\u2019s Mideast peace plan in Bahrain, set to run 25-26 June.<\/p>\n
