Well, it\u2019s big:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The tax authority looks set to settle with Global Telecom Holding<\/b>, potentially removing an overhang that has sapped sentiment on the EGX;<\/li>\n<li>The central bank <b>left interest rates on hold<\/b> this at its Thursday meeting;<\/li>\n<li><b>The EGP is strengthened again on Thursday<\/b>, closing the day at 16.9317 to the greenback. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Global markets are also taking a breather:<\/b> The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq are closed tomorrow for Memorial Day in the US, while the London Stock Exchange will also close its doors for the late-May bank holiday. US and UK markets reopen on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><b>The trade and finance ministries will meet today with the heads of export councils<\/b> to discuss ways of settling overdue export subsidies, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almasryalyoum.com\/news\/details\/1400131\">Al Masry Al Youm reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aa90cf00-7e68-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/5\/1642.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <b>The ongoing battle between the US and China over trade and tech spooked the markets again last week.<\/b> The S&P was down for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8842567c-7db8-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">third week in a row<\/a>, while the Dow was down for the fifth week running, its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-rise-after-selloff-11558685546?mod=hp_major_pos19\">longest losing streak since 2011<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/da1dcdcc-7d5a-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">Yields on US 10-year treasuries<\/a> fell to lows not seen since October 2017 as investors piled into safe-haven assets. Market expectations of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/aa90cf00-7e68-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">a rate-cut in the US<\/a> continued to rise, with federal fund futures putting the likelihood of a cut before the end of 2019 at 78.5%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-23\/oil-set-for-biggest-weekly-drop-of-the-year-on-trade-tensions?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><b>Oil also took a hit<\/b><\/a>, with WTI suffering its worst week of 2019 down 6.6% and Brent falling 4.9%.<\/p>\n<p><b>Boiled frog syndrome? <\/b>Global investors are becoming quite grumpy about global risk amid Brexit and US-China rivalry, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/da1dcdcc-7d5a-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">FT warns<\/a>, with one columnist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7068af9c-7d72-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">drawing a parallel to the days before the Great Recession<\/a>: \u201cMarket shocks often erupt after a long period of slowly heating up \u2026 The mortgage and credit excesses were simmering back in 2005, for instance, only for investors to stay focused on squeezing markets for a little extra return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Signs of the times:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-24\/this-week-markets-finally-woke-up-to-the-global-wall-of-worry\">Markets show they're finally waking up to global wall of worry<\/a> on Bloomberg and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-economy\/world-faces-clear-and-present-danger-from-trade-war-escalation-idUSKCN1SU1RY?il=0\">World faces 'clear and present danger' from trade war escalation<\/a>, a Reuters piece picking up on the OECD pronouncement we noted on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-24\/this-week-markets-finally-woke-up-to-the-global-wall-of-worry?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/5\/178.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Emerging markets aren\u2019t doing too great either:<\/b> EM equity funds lost USD 3.8 bn during the week ending Wednesday, marking the <b>fifth consecutive week of outflows <\/b>amid the worst performance for developing markets since the height of last year\u2019s EM Zombie Apocalypse, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fa106960-7da9-11e9-81d2-f785092ab560\">the FT writes<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-24\/this-week-markets-finally-woke-up-to-the-global-wall-of-worry?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Money continued to flow out<\/a> of BlackRock\u2019s EM ETF \u2014 the most actively-traded EM ETF. Data also shows that investors pulled USD 1.1 bn from EM bond funds in the past week, the second consecutive week of losses.<\/p>\n<p><b>It\u2019s not all bad news though:<\/b> EM manufacturing and services PMIs have risen above developed economies for the first time since 2013. We have more on this in this morning\u2019s Macro Picture.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>It\u2019s election day in much of the European Union<\/b>, with poll watchers waiting anxiously for voting booths to close tonight for a sense of whether the EU will face a more fragmented parliament. Both the center-right European People's Party and center-left Socialists and Democrats are losing support to harder-line competitors amid an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2019\/05\/22\/eu-polls-populism-surge-as-brexit-party-forecast-to-take-most-seats-in-european-parliament\">upsurge<\/a> in populism, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2019\/05\/25\/the-thing-eurocrats-are-most-worried-about-with-eu-election-results\">Euronews<\/a> warns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-eu-election\/europeans-vote-with-eu-future-in-balance-idUSKCN1SV0QQ\">Reuters<\/a> has more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Why do we care? <\/b>First, the EU is our top trade and investment partner. Add to that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>An anticipated \u201cgreen wave\u201d could push more EU-based companies to move polluting industries our way. <\/b>An exit poll in Ireland, where voters came out on Friday, underlined \u201cconcerns about climate change and the environment [that] may bolster the pro-EU Greens group and could mean tighter regulations for industry.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><b>Mario Draghi\u2019s term is nearly over: <\/b>The elections will set the tone when European leaders meet to start choosing the next head of the European Central Bank, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/in-europe-haggling-begins-over-who-will-succeed-mario-draghi-11558782000\">WSJ notes<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>You know you\u2019re onto something when the opportunists plot: <\/b>An \u201cobscure Cypriot\u201d group of investors are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-23\/obscure-cypriot-plots-10-billion-bet-on-east-mediterranean-gas\">planning a USD 5-10 bn spending spree on Eastern Mediterranean gas<\/a>, claiming to be \u201cin talks with \u2018some of the most respected global family offices, private equity firms and sovereign funds\u2019 about raising the cash,\u201d Bloomberg writes.
