The move came after President Abdel Fattah El Sisi directed the government to amend the contentious legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2018\/11\/05\/are-amendments-to-egypts-contentious-ngos-act-in-the-offing\/\">during last year\u2019s World Youth Forum<\/a>. The 98-article bill is expected to scrap prison sentences for violations of the act and create a single body charged with supervising civil society groups, among other details announced <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/04\/07\/govt-to-issue-new-legislation-replacing-2017-ngo-law\/\">last month<\/a> following <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/01\/13\/govt-to-invite-foreign-ngos-to-take-part-in-national-dialogue-to-amend-ngos-act\/\">public consultations<\/a> with several local and international NGOs.<\/p>\n<p><b>What\u2019s next? <\/b>The bill will now make its way to the Council of State (Maglis El Dawla) for review before heading to the House of Representatives, where it will need to move through committee before going to the House General Assembly for a final vote.<\/p>\n<p><b>Background:<\/b> The NGO law passed in 2017 placed sharp restrictions on civil society and was roundly criticized by domestic and international NGOs as well as the global press.
