We\u2019ll also have full coverage tomorrow from on the ground in Benban.<\/p>\n<p>Key events coming up this week:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>It\u2019s PMI day<\/b>: The purchasing managers\u2019 index for Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE is due out today at 6:15am CLT. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markiteconomics.com\/Public\/Release\/PressReleases?language=en\">You\u2019ll find it here<\/a> at the appointed hour.<\/li>\n<li><b>Foreign reserves:<\/b> The CBE should announce Egypt\u2019s net foreign reserves figure for the end of April imminently.<\/li>\n<li><b>Inflation:<\/b> Monthly inflation figures are due out at the end of the week. Annual headline urban inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/04\/11\/annual-headline-inflation-eases-slightly-in-march\/\">eased slightly in March<\/a> to 14.2%, down from 14.4% the previous month.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-emerging-rates-factbox\/factbox-the-only-way-is-down-emerging-central-banks-keep-cutting-rates-idUSKCN1S73M3\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/5\/2806.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Emerging-market central banks continue easing:<\/b> Rate cuts by emerging-market central banks exceeded hikes for the third consecutive month in April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-emerging-rates-factbox\/factbox-the-only-way-is-down-emerging-central-banks-keep-cutting-rates-idUSKCN1S73M3\">Reuters says<\/a>. A total of three net rate cuts were made across 37 emerging markets last month, the same as in February and March.<\/p>\n<p><b>Riyadh is pushing ahead with bond market reform:<\/b> Saudi Arabia will for the first time allow retail investors to buy sovereign sukuks under reforms announced by government officials in April, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ded9c6e6-676a-11e9-9adc-98bf1d35a056\">the FT reports<\/a>. The Finance Ministry is looking to make it easier for retail investors to purchase sukuk by issuing them in portions of SAR 1,000 instead of the current SAR 1 mn. \u201cWe want to encourage savings; our market has very little savings schemes,\u201d Finance Minister Mohammed Al Jabaan told the FT.<\/p>\n<p><b>But investors will need more protection before entering the Saudi government bond market,<\/b> Daniel Vaughan, manager research director at Morningstar Investment Management Europe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/ded9c6e6-676a-11e9-9adc-98bf1d35a056\">told International Adviser (paywall)<\/a>. \u201cAnything that makes a market broader and deeper should be encouraged, however with retail investors becoming more involved we hope that the move will be accompanied by a specific regulatory framework to protect investors and ensure proper access to information about risks,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Unemployment in the US has fallen to the lowest level since 1969<\/b>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-economy\/u-s-job-growth-surges-unemployment-rate-drops-to-3-6-idUSKCN1S9075\">Reuters<\/a> reports April saw a higher-than-anticipated 263k jobs created and a slow-but-steady rise in average wages. <b>The upside for EM:<\/b> The odds of the Federal Reserve changing its policy stance and raising interest rates anytime soon just went down again. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/7ba8b150-6d90-11e9-80c7-60ee53e6681d\">The Financial Times<\/a> also has the story.<\/p>\n<p><b>Too good to be true? <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/economy\/is-this-the-too-good-to-be-true-economy\/2019\/05\/03\/9f05aff0-6dbc-11e9-8f44-e8d8bb1df986_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.7dd4c76e3ce1\">The Washington Post<\/a> wonders whether experts are missing subtle warning signs.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Sign of the times #1: <\/b>One US hedge fund manager is warning that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0f6a6a34-6d12-11e9-a9a5-351eeaef6d84\">we could be looking at Vixmageddon<\/a>, grumbling that his competitors are too complacency about the notion that global markets will remain calm through the end of this year. \u201cIt\u2019s incredible how short the memory of the market is.\u201d Truer words\u2026<\/p>\n<p><b>Sign of the times #2: <\/b>\u201cInvestors appear to be wary of frontier markets, pulling some USD 219 mn out of frontier-focused funds in March,\u201d the WSJ\u2019s weekly frontier column suggests, quoting a Citi frontier analyst as saying, \u201cThe USD 219 mn outflow, driven by active frontier funds, was the biggest this year and indicates that fundraising is off to a challenging start in 2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Other international business headlines<\/b> you should know about this morning:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>A \u201csecretive\u201d tech fund at Goldman Sachs is doing more than future-proofing the bank<\/b> \u2014 it\u2019s generated returns of 25% or more p.a. in each of the last seven years.
