<\/a> British Airways, Lufthansa abruptly suspend flights to Cairo, citing \u201csecurity concerns\u201d:<\/b> British Airways decided yesterday to suspend for seven days its flights to Cairo \u201cas a precaution to allow for further assessment\u201d of security arrangements, the airline said in a statement, according to Reuters<\/a>. Three sources from Egypt\u2019s airport security told the newswire that \u201cBritish staff had been checking security at Cairo airport on Wednesday and Thursday,\u201d but did not provide further details. Lufthansa followed suit with a one-day suspension of its flights to Cairo from Munich and Frankfurt yesterday, saying it would resume flights again today, according to the newswire.<\/p>\n

British gov\u2019t didn\u2019t order the suspension, but did raise threat level in Egypt travel advisory:<\/b> Egypt\u2019s Civil Aviation Ministry said in a statement yesterday<\/a> that the British airliner\u2019s decision to suspend flights was not ordered from the British foreign or transport ministries. However, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office updated its travel advice on Egypt<\/a> to say that there is \u201ca heightened risk of terrorism against aviation.\u201d The Civil Aviation Ministry also said it would arrange additional flights from Cairo to Heathrow airport in London to accommodate travelers\u2019 plans.<\/p>\n

Lest you need a reminder, the UK\u2019s ban on flights to Sharm El Sheikh is still in place<\/b> since it was imposed in 2015 following the Russian Metrojet crash. Last we heard on the matter, British Prime Minister Theresa May said in February<\/a> that the ban was still \u201cunder review.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story is picking up steam in the foreign press<\/b>, with the Financial Times<\/a>, Bloomberg<\/a>, the Associated Press<\/a>, Huffington Post<\/a>, Sky News<\/a>, BBC<\/a>, and of course British tabloids including the Daily Star<\/a> and Metro<\/a> all taking note.<\/p>\n
