We have the full rundown in this morning\u2019s Speed Round, below.<\/p>\n<p><b>The EGX didn\u2019t have a great second quarter. <\/b>The EGX is back today from a four-day weekend. Last week, the bourse issued a report stating that the EGX30 fell 4.3% in 2Q2019, with analysts we spoke with telling us that the Global Telecom Holdings dispute and a turbulent global market as a result of the US-China trade war contributed to the decline. We have more in this morning\u2019s Speed Round below.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>It\u2019s interest rate day next week:<\/b> The CBE\u2019s Monetary Policy Committee will meet to review interest rates on Thursday, 11 July. The MPC <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/05\/26\/egypts-central-bank-keeps-interest-rates-on-hold\/\">left key rates<\/a> on hold at the last meeting in May and the expectation is that it is likely to do the same again this month \u2014 especially considering the fuel and electricity subsidy cuts.<\/p>\n<p>Watch for these news triggers in the coming days:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>PMI:<\/b> The purchasing managers\u2019 index for Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE will be released tomorrow.<\/li>\n<li><b>Foreign reserves:<\/b> The CBE is due to release Egypt\u2019s net foreign reserve figures for June this week.<\/li>\n<li><b>Inflation:<\/b> Monthly inflation figures are due out next week.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebrd.com\/who-we-are\/senior-management\/alain-pilloux\"><b>Alain Pilloux<\/b><\/a><b>, vice president of banking at the EBRD, began a four-day visit to Egypt yesterday<\/b> with a meeting with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly. Piloux suggested that the EBRD might fund Egypt\u2019s monorail project. We have more in this morning\u2019s Diplomacy + Foreign Trade, below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcham.org.eg\/login\/login.asp?ReturnUrl=%2Fcyberlink%2Fevents%2Fregister%2F1214\"><b>It\u2019s your last chance to register<\/b><\/a><b> for AmCham\u2019s monthly luncheon with Electricity Minister Mohamed Shaker,<\/b> taking place today.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-05\"><\/a> <b>The planned resumption of US-China trade talks is doing good by global stocks<\/b> as investors are banking on improved global economic growth, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-global-markets\/u-s-china-trade-truce-pushes-global-stocks-higher-idUSKCN1TV10G?il=0\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, Nasdaq Composite, and MSCI\u2019s broadest global index all rose yesterday, and the USD rose around 0.4%, driving gold prices down 1.5%. \u201c\u2018Any step toward a trade resolution \u2014 and it doesn\u2019t have to be a lot of progress \u2014 just a step, is viewed very positively by markets,\u2019 said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James in St. Petersburg, Florida. \u2018And investors at this point are trying to focus on the positive in hopes that there will be some trade resolution down the line.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Restarting negotiations is piling pressure on the US Federal Reserve to move ahead with its first rate cut in a decade<\/b> to help strengthen the US economy and put The Donald in a stronger position in the trade talks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed\/u-s-china-trade-agreement-takes-little-pressure-off-fed-to-cut-rates-idUSKCN1TW2VS?il=0\">according to the newswire<\/a>. Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said last week that slowing economic growth made it more likely that a rate cut would come to fruition in the next few months, but cautioned against knee-jerk policy responses to current conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8c87fcaa-9c17-11e9-b8ce-8b459ed04726\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/7\/1714.png?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>A slump in global manufacturing is a signal that easing tensions could not happen soon enough.<\/b> The impact of the trade standoff on the global economy can be seen in a series of bleak manufacturing index releases from JP Morgan and IHS Markit, which showed manufacturing slumping across the world, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8c87fcaa-9c17-11e9-b8ce-8b459ed04726\">according to the Financial Times<\/a>. Key Asian markets, including South Korea, China, and Japan, as well as most eurozone countries have reported falling output, which some analysts are concerned could start a domino effect of job cuts and a downturn in the services sector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/7\/2335.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <b>US companies took the lead in the global M&A market in 2Q2019<\/b>, as corporates took advantage of gains in the equity and debt markets to hammer out several mega agreements, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-deals-global-review\/us-dominates-second-quarter-global-ma-as-mega-deals-roll-on-idUSKCN1TT0JP\">according to Reuters<\/a>. Major agreements in the US included a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-utc-m-a-raytheon\/united-technologies-raytheon-to-create-120-billion-aerospace-and-defense-giant-idUSKCN1TA0S6\">USD 121 bn merger<\/a> between United Technologies\u2019 aerospace division and Raytheon, AbbVie\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/news.google.com\/articles\/CAIiEELy3x3uzIDMIpkXY1j8AZsqFwgEKg8IACoHCAow1tzJATDnyxUw54IY?hl=en-US&gl=US&ceid=US%3Aen\">USD 63 bn<\/a> acquisition of Allergan, and Occidental Petroleum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-09\/chevron-will-walk-away-from-33-billion-deal-to-buy-anadarko\">USD 38 bn<\/a> purchase of Anadarko.<\/p>\n<p><b>But European and Asian M&As plunge:<\/b> The mega agreements were not enough to prop up global M&A volumes, which fell 27% y-o-y in 2Q, Refinitiv data shows.The value of European M&As plummeted 54% to USD 152 bn in 2Q2019 while Asian companies fell 49% to USD 132 bn. In comparison, US M&As dipped only 3% over the quarter. Hernan Cristerna, global M&A co-head at JPMorgan Chase, said that European firms \u201crisk losing their competitive edge\u201d if they continue to fall behind their US rivals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-01\/opec-set-to-extend-oil-output-cuts-into-2020-as-demand-falters?srnd=premium-middle-east\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/7\/2533.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Riyadh and Moscow give their blessings to an oil supply cut extension:<\/b> The alliance between OPEC and non-OPEC oil producers is set to extend oil supply cuts until March 2020 at the two-day OPEC+ meeting which began yesterday in Vienna, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-07-01\/opec-set-to-extend-oil-output-cuts-into-2020-as-demand-falters?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. Concern is reportedly growing among exporters that supply growth will soon outstrip weakening demand. Plans to extend the cuts were discussed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during last weekend\u2019s G20 summit.
