Inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/08\/14\/egypts-headline-inflation-falls-to-four-year-low-in-july-despite-subsidy-cuts\/\">fell unexpectedly<\/a> to a four-year low of 8.7% in July.<\/p>\n<p>Three conferences get underway in the capital tomorrow:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>The Japan Arab Economic Forum<\/b> (Nile Ritz Carlton)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euromoneyconferences.com\/event\/a011t00000FMpvZAAT\/the-euromoney-egypt-conference-2019#agenda\"><b>The Euromoney Egypt Conference<\/b><\/a> (venue not disclosed)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saharaexpo.com\/en\/home.html\"><b>The Sahara agricultural expo<\/b><\/a> (Egypt International Exhibition Center).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/9londonconference.efghermes.com\/pages\/home.aspx\"><b>EFG Hermes\u2019 four-day London conference<\/b><\/a><b> also kicks off tomorrow<\/b> at the Arsenal Emirates Stadium.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/965d72e2-d0cd-11e9-b018-ca4456540ea6\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/9\/1733.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <b>A record amount of corporate paper was issued last week.<\/b> Companies across the world took advantage of historically low interest rates last week and issued a record USD 140 bn in corporate paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/965d72e2-d0cd-11e9-b018-ca4456540ea6\">the Financial Times reports<\/a>, citing Dealogic data. US companies alone sold USD 72 bn-worth of bonds last week, almost equal to the total amount issued in August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-05\/bond-bulls-get-big-reminder-that-treasuries-aren-t-one-way-trade\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/9\/1078.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>Yields responded accordingly:<\/b> The deluge of corporate issuances contributed to a surge in US and German bond yields on Thursday, interrupting the rally in August that saw yields across the world sink to record lows, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-05\/bond-bulls-get-big-reminder-that-treasuries-aren-t-one-way-trade\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. Rates on two-year bonds were at one point up 14 points, while the iShares ETF tracking long-term bonds suffered its biggest daily loss since the election of Donald Trump. \u201cTreasuries are not a one-way trade, even as the trend is for lower yields,\u201d said Scott Buchta, head of fixed income strategy at Brean Capital. \u201cIt\u2019s a risk-on related move today given trade-talks are back on. But the backdrop of the high level of corporate issuance is also adding some volatility and putting upside pressure on Treasury yields.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>This caused investors to rush into emerging markets:<\/b> Thursday\u2019s bond sell-off coincided with a surge in high-yielding EM debt, Anders Faergemann, senior portfolio manager at Pinebridge Investments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-05\/haven-rout-sends-wall-of-money-rushing-into-emerging-markets\">told Bloomberg<\/a>. This helped junk debt to recover slightly from August, when investors <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/03\/investors-pulled-usd-13-8-bn-from-emerging-markets-in-august-iif\/\">pulled USD 13.8 bn<\/a> from EMs \u2014 a large part of which went into investment-grade bonds in developed markets.<\/p>\n<p><b>Equity investors are currently faced with a situation of \u201ceerie similarity\u201d to last year\u2019s near-recession<\/b> when the US stock market was close to losing USD 5 tn in value, Elena Popina and Vildana Hajric <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-06\/a-year-after-armageddon-stock-traders-stare-into-familiar-abyss?srnd=premium-middle-east\">write for Bloomberg<\/a>. But there was no recession then, even though the two factors that are spooking investors today were at play at the time: An all-out US-China trade war and factory output woes. What\u2019s most significantly different now is the more proactive US Fed, whose chairman Jay Powell said over the weekend it is \u201cgoing to continue to watch all of these factors, and all the geopolitical things that are happening, and\u2026 act as appropriate to sustain this expansion.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Al-Faleh \u201cout of favor\u201d as Salman taps his son as Saudi\u2019s new energy minister:<\/b> Saudi Arabia\u2019s King Salman has appointed his son Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud as the kingdom\u2019s new energy minister, succeeding Khalid Al-Faleh, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spa.gov.sa\/viewfullstory.php?lang=en&newsid=1966424\">Saudi Press Agency statement<\/a>. Al-Faleh was also replaced as the chairman of Saudi Aramco <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/09\/03\/what-were-tracking-on-3-september-2019\/\">last week<\/a>, with former royal court advisor and the head of the country\u2019s sovereign wealth fund Yasir Al-Rumayyan assuming the position ahead of the oil giant\u2019s imminent IPO. \u201cIn the murky world of Saudi politics, it wasn\u2019t immediately clear why Al-Falih [sic] fell out of favor. It has been speculated that there was dissatisfaction with the low price of oil as the vital Saudi Aramco IPO nears,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-09-07\/saudi-replaces-energy-minister-al-falih-with-an-mbs-brother?srnd=premium-middle-east\">says Bloomberg<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also in global miscellany:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Zimbabwe\u2019s Mugabe passes away:<\/b> Robert Mugabe, whose 37-year rule of Zimbabwe was instrumental in toppling white colonial occupation but also led the country to the brink of economic collapse, died last week in a Singapore hospital, aged 95. He fell from power in a bloodless coup almost two years ago. The new \u201cKlaytnPhone\u201d will reportedly come installed with blockchain apps, a wallet for cryptocurrencies, and a certain amount of a new digital currency, called \u201cKlay\u201d coins, for buyers to use.
