Under the terms of the agreement, China will increase purchases of certain agricultural goods, and take new measures related to intellectual property, currency, and financial services.<\/p>\n<p><b>Response to the planned agreement has been mixed:<\/b> Some fund managers and economists have described it as \u201cmore cosmetic than real,\u201d offering few substantive benefits and of too limited a scope to remove the uncertainty accompanying the US-China relationship. The planned agreement falls short of resolving many of the thorniest issues between the two nations, and the US has not rolled back any of the existing tariffs imposed on Chinese goods since early 2018, nor has it declared any intention to ease its crackdown on Huawei, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-10-11\/u-s-china-said-to-reach-partial-deal-could-set-up-trade-truce-k1melw60?srnd=premium-middle-east\">Bloomberg says<\/a>. Equities advanced globally on Friday in anticipation of a trade truce, although US stocks gave up some of their gains after the agreement was announced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"web-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2023\/3\/Federal-Reserve-1600px.jpg?ssl=1\"><\/p>\n<p><b>US Fed to go on bond-buying spree: <\/b>The US Federal Reserve will start on 15 October purchasing USD 60 bn-worth of treasuries bills a month until at least the end of 1Q2020, to pump reserves into the banking system, it said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalreserve.gov\/newsevents\/pressreleases\/monetary20191011a.htm\">in a statement on Friday<\/a>. The move was in response to a recent spike in the overnight funds rate to near the top end of the Fed\u2019s target range, but doesn\u2019t \u201crepresent a change in the stance of [its] monetary policy.\u201d Alongside the open market operation, the Fed will also increase until January overnight lending through repurchase agreements (repos) \u201cto ensure that the supply of reserves remains ample even during periods of sharp increases in non-reserve liabilities.\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/baa7e796-ec38-11e9-85f4-d00e5018f061\">FT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed-bonds\/fed-launches-treasury-bill-buys-in-bid-for-ample-reserves-idUSKBN1WQ22D\">Reuters<\/a> have more.<\/p>\n<p><b>Libra dealt another major blow as financial backers head for the exit doors:<\/b> MasterCard, Visa, eBay, Stripe, and Mercado Pago are pulling the plug on their financial backing for Facebook\u2019s digital currency, Libra, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/a3e952dc-ec5c-11e9-85f4-d00e5018f061\">according to the FT<\/a>. The companies have flagged concerns about international regulators and government scrutiny over what the cryptocurrency might mean for the global banking and financial systems. PayPal also backed out of Libra last week.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><b>Arab League threatens retaliatory measures as Turkish invasion of Syria continues:<\/b> Arab foreign ministers yesterday called on the UN to halt military support to Turkey and threatened to take \u201cdiplomatic, economic, investment, cultural measures\u201d as Ankara pushed ahead with its invasion of north east Syria, according to a communique seen by the Associated Press. Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called the incursion an \u201cinvasion of an Arab state\u2019s land and an aggression on its sovereignty,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/af.reuters.com\/article\/egyptNews\/idAFL5N26X0CD\">Reuters reported<\/a>. Turkey <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/ab6f1a63387c4d67a2d3bdd0a45106fd\">said it had taken a key border town yesterday<\/a>, four days after it began the operation. EU governments reacted with fury after Ankara threatened to send mns of refugees to Europe last week.<\/p>\n<p><b>Tensions in the East Med are also rising:<\/b> The French navy is joining Cyprus for naval exercises today as Turkish military-escorted drillships arrive in the area where Cyprus licensed Eni and Total to drill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/a7bbf574961e45aa97461d8518fd553f\">the Associated Press reports<\/a>. Eni <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/9858ce3b4b3f4f02abaf758d63242c47\">has said<\/a> that it will not begin drilling if Turkish warships appear in the area. President of the European Council Donald Tusk on Friday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apnews.com\/4b3c40a243a9463fb0376a4551ae3620\">called on Turkey<\/a> to stop its \u201cillegal\u201d drilling operation.<\/p>\n<p><b>The \u2018tanker war\u2019 comes to the Red Sea: <\/b>An Iranian oil tanker came under attack near Saudi Arabia\u2019s Jeddah on Friday, damaging its two main tanks and causing an oil spill in the Red Sea, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/iranian-tanker-on-fire-after-explosion-off-saudi-coast-state-media-says-11570776781\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>.
