Bad news, when you consider that we\u2019d like to export a lot more, from manufacturing to tourism.<\/li>\n<li><strong>GAFI is now requiring all companies with a foreign shareholder to report <\/strong><strong>extra data every quarter<\/strong>, including key financial figures. Make sure you give us your name and complete contact information at the bottom of the survey.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>Egyptian-born British-American economist Dame Minouche Shafik is reportedly <\/strong><strong>the frontrunner to lead the Bank of England<\/strong> (BoE) as of February 2020, succeeding current governor Mark Carney, <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-britain-boe-governor-factbox\/factbox-britain-set-to-announce-next-bank-of-england-governor-idUKKBN1YK0PB\">Reuters reports<\/a>, picking up where the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/fb779c2e-1f5c-11ea-92da-f0c92e957a96\">Financial Times<\/a> left off last week. If selected, she would become the first woman to take the helm of the bank in its 325-year history. Shafik, who is currently the director of the London School of Economics, previously served as deputy managing director at the IMF and also served as BoE deputy governor for three years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We had the chance to have a chat with Dame Minouche back in March<\/strong> after her lecture at the American University in Cairo. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/03\/25\/our-exclusive-sit-down-with-dame-nemat-minouche-shafik\/\">Read it here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class='web-image stand-out-borderless' ><a href='http:\/\/somabay.com\/'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/12\/2265.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>Investors return to EM assets as uncertainties dissipate:<\/strong> Emerging market shares may be in for a \u201crisk rally\u201d during the final week of December despite concerns over the state of US-China trade, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-15\/caution-abounds-even-as-emerging-markets-ready-year-ending-rally\">according to Bloomberg<\/a>. Equities and currencies saw their biggest gains since June after the US and China <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/15\/us-china-announce-preliminary-trade-agreement-8443\/\">agreed a preliminary trade pact<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/12\/what-were-tracking-on-12-december-2019-8325\/\">the Federal Reserve signalled<\/a> it will keep rates on hold through 2020, and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/15\/what-were-tracking-on-15-december-2019-8429\/\">Boris Johnson won a parliamentary majority<\/a> in the UK election.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But skepticism persists about how the world\u2019s two largest economies will tackle the biggest sources of disagreement.<\/strong> \u201cThis is only a short-term solution,\u201d said Luciano Jannelli, head of investment strategy at Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank. \u201cIf you look at the lack of progress on the issue of China\u2019s industrial policy \u2014 its subsidizing of specific business lines \u2014 the big issues have not been tackled yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class='web-image' ><a href='https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-gain-as-chinas-economy-shows-gains-11576490619?mod=hp_lead_pos1'><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ent.news\/2019\/12\/914.jpg?ssl=1\" alt='enterprise'><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Global stocks were high yesterday<\/strong> on the back of the US-China de-escalation, with the US\u2019 S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq Composite all closing yesterday \u201cat the highest levels ever,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/global-stocks-gain-as-chinas-economy-shows-gains-11576490619?mod=hp_lead_pos1\">the Wall Street Journal says<\/a>. Europe\u2019s Stoxx Europe 600 index was also up yesterday, hitting a new record high for the first time in four years, according to the journal.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The outlook for the global economy isn\u2019t suddenly rosy, though:<\/strong> Even with the cloud of uncertainty from the US and China, as well as Brexit, largely clearing, investors are still hesitant to give the all-clear for the global economy. Analysts point to US government bond yields remaining historically low despite rising slightly. \u201cSince yields tend to rise and fall with the economic outlook, the fact that they are so low is signaling that any pickup in economic activity \u2018is likely to remain muted,\u2019 said Christopher Sullivan, chief investment officer at United Nations Federal Credit Union.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>The Turkish lira took its biggest tumble in two months yesterday after President <\/strong><strong>Recep Erdogan threatened to close two NATO bases<\/strong> if the US decides to impose sanctions on Ankara over its purchase of a Russian missile system, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-12-16\/erdogan-warns-turkey-may-shut-down-key-nato-air-base-and-radar\">Bloomberg reports<\/a>. Yesterday\u2019s drop was the largest emerging market currency decline as Erdogan\u2019s threats made markets uneasy, the business information service notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile, Ankara also deployed military drones to northern Cyprus<\/strong> as tensions continue to rise in the Mediterranean over its <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/01\/egypt-condemns-libya-turkey-mediterranean-agreement-7320\/\">recent maritime border demarcation agreement<\/a> with Libya, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/dec\/16\/turkey-delivers-armed-drone-to-northern-cyprus-amid-growing-tension-libya-deal\">according to the Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p>In other international news:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Progress in Saudi-Qatar talks:<\/strong> Qatar\u2019s Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani has <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/videos\/world\/2019\/12\/15\/connect-the-world-doha-forum-gcc-qatari-foreign-minister-mohammed-bin-abdulrahaman-al-thani.cnn\">told CNN<\/a> that there has been \u201csome progress\u201d in talks with Saudi Arabia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lebanon protests turn violent: <\/strong>Lebanese security forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters demonstrating against resigned Prime Minister Saad Hariri, who pundits expect will be back in office, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/655b3d5b11c2e7ad4a1822a448a27e75\">the Associated Press reports<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>*** Facing a lot of time in the car today <\/strong>on your way to work or to \/ from meetings?
