British newspaper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisismoney.co.uk\/money\/markets\/article-7767529\/Boss-1-5bn-bid-gold-miner-Centamin-faces-bribe-probe.html\">the Mail on Sunday<\/a> reported yesterday that the French government has been investigating allegations that S\u00e9bastien de Montessus allegedly made fraudulent financial declarations while he was deputy CEO of state-owned French nuclear firm Areva and bribed a foreign public official. De Montessus denies all allegations. The story, broken by the Mail\u2019s business section, has since been picked up by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/business\/endeavour-boss-s-bastien-de-montessus-in-inquiry-over-corruption-scandal-at-areva-8gvcmwd0f\">Times of London<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Endeavour has previously disclosed the investigation<\/strong>, writing in its annual report that \u201cDe Montessus\u2019s status in the French inquiry changed in March 2018 to \u2018mis en examen\u2019 or \u2018under judicial inquiry\u2019, adding: \u2018This is an investigative stage of the inquiry and does not equate to being \u201ccharged\u201d in the UK and North America.\u201d\u2019 Endeavour\u2019s board \u201cdid not consider that the ongoing inquiry would impede De Montessus\u2019s ability to carry out his responsibilities and effectively execute his duties as chief executive officer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are also questions over Endeavour\u2019s attempted merger with Centamin:<\/strong> Officials are also investigating why Endeavour denied Centamin access to company information necessary for it to conduct due diligence after the bid was announced. The London-listed operator of Egypt\u2019s Sukari gold mine last week <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/04\/centamin-rejects-usd-1-9-bn-endeavour-merger-proposal-7709\/\">unanimously rejected<\/a> Endeavour\u2019s all-share merger proposal on the grounds that it would disproportionately benefit the Canadian firm\u2019s shareholders. Under the plans, Endeavour would have acquired a 52.9% stake in the joint company, while Centamin would control the remaining 47.1%. We <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2019\/12\/08\/endeavour-isnt-giving-up-on-centamin-merger-plans-7914\/\">noted yesterday<\/a> that Endeavour was \u201creaching out to Centamin shareholders\u201d in the hope they would reconsider their rejection of the all-share merger proposal.
