<\/span>Egypt, Turkey reappoint ambassadors: <\/span>Egypt and Turkey yesterday restored <\/span>diplomatic ties and announced the appointment of ambassadors for the first time in 10 years, marking a significant thawing of tensions triggered by the overthrow of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n

Who\u2019s who:<\/span> Cairo has nominated <\/span>Amr Elhamamy<\/span> to serve as its ambassador in Ankara, while Turkey has appointed <\/span>Salih<\/a><\/span>Mutlu<\/a><\/span>\u015een<\/a><\/span> as its ambassador to Cairo, the countries said in <\/span>a jo<\/a><\/span>i<\/a><\/span>nt statement<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What they said:<\/span> \u201cThis step aims to establish normal relations between the two countries once again and demonstrates their mutual determination to work towards enhancing their bilateral relations for the best interest of both the Turkish and Egyptian peoples,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

This had been in the cards for a few weeks:<\/span> President Abdel Fattah El Sisi <\/span>agreed<\/a><\/span> with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to fully normalize ties immediately following <\/span>Erdogan\u2019s reelection<\/a><\/span> in May.<\/span><\/p>\n

Several high-level meetings and one presidential handshake later: <\/span>The two countries have been inching closer to restoring ties for months, with El Sisi and Erdogan <\/span>shaking hands<\/a><\/span> in a brief encounter during the 2022 World Cup and Turkish companies pledging to <\/span>invest USD 500 mn<\/a><\/span> in Egypt only three months later. The chief diplomats of the two countries <\/span>in March<\/a><\/span> pledged to put aside their differences and normalize relations in a meeting in Cairo, three weeks after <\/span>Shoukry traveled to Turkey<\/a><\/span> to show support following the earthquakes that hit the south of the country and Syria.<\/span><\/p>\n

An inaugural El Sisi-Erdogan summit next? <\/span>Officials from the two sides <\/span>have said publicly<\/a><\/span> that they\u2019re preparing a first meeting between El Sisi and Erdogan, though a date is yet to be announced. <\/span><\/p>\n

The move comes amid a broader push for reconciliation in the region: <\/span>We normalized relations with Qatar back <\/span>in 2021<\/a><\/span> and are currently looking to improve relations with <\/span>Iran<\/a><\/span>. Qatar and the UAE are<\/span>restoring<\/a><\/span> diplomatic relations, <\/span>Syria has been welcomed back into the Arab League<\/a><\/span>, and Saudi Arabia and Iran are <\/span>working to end years of hostilities<\/a><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
