THE BIG STORY here at home this morning: We\u2019ve got a bit of an unintentional banki<\/span>ng theme going<\/span>, as Reuters reports that the Madbouly government is hiring advisors for a sale of its 20% stake in Alexbank, and lawmakers vote through changes to some outdated banking legislation. <\/span><\/p>\n

On the global front, it\u2019s a pivotal day for the US central bank:<\/span> The US F<\/span>ed could press \u2018pause\u2019 on its monetary tightening for the first time in over a year. We have all the details below. But first:<\/span><\/p>\n

PRIVATIZATION WATCH- <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/a> <\/span>Business leaders call on gov\u2019t to make privatization plans a reality: <\/span>Business <\/span>leaders participating in the National Dialogue urged the government to speed up the implementation of the state ownership policy during a dialogue session on the topic yesterday. The government\u2019s delay in exiting its stakes in state-owned companies has led <\/span>to the IMF to <\/span>delay its review<\/a><\/span> of our USD 3 bn loan and pushed Moody\u2019s to <\/span>downgrade Egypt\u2019s credit ratin<\/a><\/span>g<\/a><\/span>, former industry and trade Minister Mounir Abdel Nour said \u2014 \u201ctwo moves which could negatively impact Egypt's FX liquidity.\u201d Senator Ahmed Sabbour said bureaucratic obstacles and FX rate instability appeared to be slowing progress on state asset sales. \u201cWe should have a timeframe for the privatization process because without this investors will lose confidence and patience,\u201d said Samir Sabry, rapporteur for the dialogue's private investment committee. <\/span><\/p>\n

More critique to come? <\/span>Ahmed Galal, head of the dialogue's economic committee and a former cabinet minister, called for a separate session to discuss the \u201cmany problems facing the implementation of the state ownership policy document.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

REMEMBER-<\/span> The government has sold some <\/span>USD 153 mn<\/a><\/span> worth of assets<\/span> so far in the program<\/span>,<\/span> less than 8% of the USD 2 bn it planned to raise <\/span>by the end of this month.<\/span><\/p>\n

HAPPENING TODAY-<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> <\/span>It\u2019s decision day at the Fed:<\/span> The US Federal Reserve will announce its decision on <\/span>interest rates this evening following its two-day policy meeting. The central bank is widely <\/span>expected to leave rates unchanged<\/a><\/span> at 5.0-5.25% to assess the impact of the combined 500-bps in hikes over the past year. This would be the first pause since it began aggressively tightening policy in March last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making a pause more likely: Cooler US inflation data out yesterday.<\/span> Inflation fell to 4.0% <\/span>y-o-y in May \u2014 its lowest level in 27 months and down from 4.9% the month prior, <\/span>Bloomberg<\/a><\/span> reports. Core inflation came in at 5.3% y-o-y \u2014 marking its smallest <\/span>rise<\/a><\/span> since November 2021, while still hot. <\/span><\/p>\n

This could be the wrong move, says El Erian:<\/span> Keeping interest rates unchanged and <\/span>signaling further hikes to come could be the <\/span>\u201cworst of three imperfect policy options\u201d open to a central bank that has faced a \u201csignificant erosion\u201d of its policy credibility, Mohamed El Erian writes for the <\/span>Financial Times<\/a><\/span>. Not only is a one-time pause unlikely to give the Fed a deeper understanding of how policy is impacting the economy, recent economic data has pointed to the need for an additional hike, making a pause a strange decision for a central bank that insists it is data-dependent, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

The lesser of three evils:<\/span>I<\/span>nflation may have weakened in May but it remains high historically, meaning a pause <\/span>could <\/span>\u201cend up as the muddled middle option, rendering future decisions even more challenging,\u201d El Erian writes. Instead, raising rates by 25 bps and remaining open to additional hikes is a preferable route if the Fed is truly data dependent, while another option would be to press pause this month and leave the door open for a cut later, the choice least damaging to the economy, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a><\/span>#1- A four-week-old company bags Europe\u2019s biggest ever seed round. <\/span>Parisian startup <\/span>Mistral AI so far has no developed products \u2014 but it has raised EUR 105 mn (USD 113.3 mn) in a record European seed round, reports the <\/span>Financial Times<\/a><\/span>. The startup, formed by a trio of former Meta and Google AI researchers, will launch a new \u201clarge language model\u201d early next year that is similar to the generative AI system behind ChatGPT app. The round values the month-old company at EUR 240 mn (USD 259 mn).<\/span><\/p>\n

#2- Oracle Corp founder Larry Ellison passes Bill Gates to become the world\u2019s <\/span>fourth-richest person <\/span>\u2014<\/span>with a net worth of USD 129.8 bn \u2014 thanks to a 42% rise in the company\u2019s stock so far this year, <\/span>Bloomber<\/a><\/span>g reports. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/a> <\/span>African heads of state will arrive \u201cimminently\u201d in Russia <\/span>for <\/span>talks<\/a><\/span> with President Vladimir <\/span>Putin aimed at bringing the war in Ukraine to an end, reports <\/span>Bloomberg<\/a><\/span>. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is reportedly joining the peace initiative in Moscow, as are the presidents of South Africa, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia and the Republic of Congo. Putin told military reporters on Tuesday that he has \u201cagreed to discuss current issues.\u201d Details of the group\u2019s peace proposals have not been made public, with much of the trip under wraps amid security concerns. The countries attending the meeting have all been severely affected by the conflict, which has driven a surge in global commodity prices and disrupted the trade in grain and fertilizer. <\/span><\/p>\n
