<\/span>In another sign that Turkey is changing course: <\/span>Turkish President Recep Tayyip <\/span>Erdogan has appointed former Goldman Sachs managing director and First Republic Bank co-CEO Hafize Gaye Erkan to lead the country\u2019s central bank, <\/span>Reuters<\/a><\/span>reported, citing a decision published in the country\u2019s<\/span> Official Gazette<\/span>. This comes a week after <\/span>Mehmet Simsek<\/a><\/span> was named the country\u2019s new finance minister, who pledged to bring to an end years of unorthodox monetary policies pushed by the country\u2019s president.<\/span><\/p>\n

The big question:<\/span> Whether she will be allowed to break with Erdogan\u2019s attempt to rate-cut his <\/span>way out of soaring inflation. \u201cIn order to gain credibility and anchor market expectations with the minimum dose of rate hikes, she has to ensure that the preference towards low interest rate policies...are buried in the past,\u201d one economist said.<\/span><\/p>\n
