These growths are the hardest to reach as they are protected under the \u201cblood-brain barrier,\u201d a layer of tissue and vessels around the brain, making their recurrence after removal very likely, the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/treatment-breakthrough-for-an-intractable-brain-cancer-138402b9?mod=hp_featst_pos3\" style=\"\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/span><span> says<\/span><span>. However, the new treatment reduced the risk of the tumor from growing again or returning by 61%. The  impact on quality of life was so significant that patients on the placebo were notified and given the experimental drug.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">How does it work?<\/span><span style=\"\"> The drug is able to bypass the blood-brain barrier to stop the protein that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> stimulates the tumor to grow, unlike other medications. The impact of this slowdown is that patients can avoid undertaking chemotherapy or radiation to reduce the cancer\u2019s growth \u2014 a move that avoids suffering from memory loss, among other ailments due to the hard cancer treatments. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><\/p>\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"\"> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Therapists are wary of the sensitivity surrounding mental health and how it meshes with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:700\"> upholding religious faith<\/span><span>, medical professionals wrote in the <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wellness\/2023\/05\/26\/faith-mental-health-strategies-spiritual-bypassing\/\" style=\"\">Washington Post<\/a><\/span><span>. Some people, the medical professionals say, feel uncomfortable with seeking professional psychological help or other treatment for mental illnesses, and are concerned that resorting to these treatments could undermine their commitment to their faith. These individuals are also typically concerned that treatment is tantamount to<\/span><span> a refusal to accept God\u2019s will, or as weakness in the face of life\u2019s inevitable challenges. This perception is known as spiritual bypassing, or \u201cthe use of religion or spirituality as a coping mechanism that contributes to the repression of unresolved personal and emotional problems, instead of assisting individuals to overcome them,\u201d according to <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration-skip-ink:none;-webkit-text-decoration-skip:none;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyg.2021.658739\/full\" style=\"\">a study<\/a><\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">Several faiths actually have mandates for self-care: <\/span><span style=\"\">In Islam, for example, Prophet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> Muhammad is believed to have said \u201cO servants of God, seek treatment. Verily, Allah did not send a disease but that He also sent its treatment or cure,\u201d the article\u2019s authors note. In that sense, seeking help is part of being proactive in caring for one\u2019s body and mind \u2014 much like going to a dentist or general practitioner when suffering from a physical ailment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><span style=\"font-weight:700\">The key, therapists say, is for patients to be in the driving seat<\/span><span style=\"\"> \u2014 which means that therapy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> should be shaped around their religious beliefs, rather than allowing treatment to undermine or in any way threaten faith.
